Decided to visit the Luffenham base as it was more or less on the route back to the A1 home North.I Asked at the main guard house and was made most welcome. A guard let us in and another guard from reception told us to follow his car to the trig. Once again many thanks to the 8 Engineer Brigade 1 st Military Working Dog Regiment for allowing us access.

After an agonising 30 min wait at the guard house permission to visit the pillar was finally granted and a security escort was provided to chaperone us. Can't say our assigned security team were overjoyed at the prospect of me visiting the pillar, and I kept quiet about who the 'we' were who wanted to visit the pillar until the very last minute when I produced the dog and quickly sat her on the pillar to maintain her 100% record of sitting on every pillar we've ever bagged. They might impose another ban on visits again for a while after I pulled off that stunt!

Didn't hold out much hope for this but thought it was worth a try. Asked at gate and was advised to ask in guardhouse. Went to guardhouse and asked and offered two forms of ID, which they said they didn't need but thanked me anyway. I was then escorted to the trigpoint and took my pictures whilst the guard looked on amused! I then gave him a packet of crunchie biscuits for his time and he went away happy after explaining how to get into the disused airfield to bag the project Emily Trigpoints. I felt so chuffed and I'm still smiling now ;-)

Bagging Assistant applied charm at gatehouse, which allowed access to the Guard house to explain our reason to visit, access denied entry. Informed the location is now a site of portacabins so it may be gone. Friendly chat with guards who were very interested in the mapping tools and GPS we were using. A sign of the times that access is now so limited. The impression given was that the guards would be off to check out the pillar when Off Duty.

We asked for permission to view the pillar and was refused. The very pleasant guards said they'd received an email stating no more visit, escorted or otherwise, were to be allowed. Shame. It'll be interesting to see if others are also refused entry.

Also logged as YSM492. They let me visit the trig with a guard although he said it's because they were quiet at the moment, talking to him on the way around he said it's been about a year since he last escorted anyone.

A joint visit with Carole. Ask at the Security Gate and allowed to report to the Guard House. Here we were very well received and after confirming our identities were guided to the pillar. Which as others have said is surrounded by a multitude of buildings but it is still there and in good condition. Accepted the request not to take any pictures. A very active working barracks. Our guide then asked if we would also like to visit the one on the airfield. Naturally we readily accepted the offer.

Visited for logging Ye Ole Survey Monument YSM492. Explained the reason for my visit to the gate guard and after presenting my passport and a having my picture taken, a photo ID was created and I was escorted in a civilian spec Defender 110 towards the trig. I had to guide them the last couple of hundred feet as they weren't sure of it's location. Left on my todd to do what needed to be done, before being collected and escorted back off site. Trig in top condition - full set of iron work and although a bit moss covered, the white paint of a previously well cared for trig was evident. Views were of typical military buildings and equipment (missiles, tracked vehicles etc...) with a large metal water tower towards the north. Jon.
