What a pity about the Castleton cement works! The National Trust have done a great job with the path to the summit and there is even a low mound of individual stone sets that the pillar stands on. It wasn't like this 20 years ago when I was last here! Anyway, the pillar is non-standard local stone with a plastic plug replacement. All hooks are damaged. All sight holes open. Almost all the white paint has gone. However, the views were worth it, even though there was later trauma on the open terraces as Lincoln contrived to lose 2-1 to Macclesfield in the last 10 minutes of the game! I love Mam Tor. From the <Ahem> slightly subsided road at its base, to nearly getting your head taken off by paragliders, it is superb. And the ridgewalk up to Lose Hill is superb. This was my third trig of the day - Kinder Scout and Brown Knoll being the first two.

We took our two kids and my parents for a 'nice day out' in the peaks, howling wind and driving rain, lovely. Well we all enjoyed it. Too wet and windy at the pillar to take photos but we got one of the kids looking cold and wet at hollins cross.

As the previous two guys did, I visited this T/P as part of the GCA902 geocache. Unlike them, I’m going to record this as ‘slightly damaged’. The centre plug is missing and has been replaced with a plastic bung. The attachment rings on the top have all been broken and the flush bracket has been defaced by someone carving their initials on it. Today was grey and hazy but the views were still worth the climb. On a clear day they would be magnificent. It was close to 8pm when I visited and I only had sheep for company.

Trig pillar in good condition, but the some previous visitors have shown precious little respect for this monument such as graffiti and damage to the loops. Built with local stone and had been painted white. Spider centre no longer retained OS cap. Brilliant views all round. Visited and photographed 18/09/1999, GRP.
