One of seven trigs bagged along the A66 corridor, making my way to Keswick for the bank holiday weekend. This was the first. Parked Scurragh House Lane for a short walk along the PROW. The field was planted with rapeseed that stood around 4' tall. It wasn't raining but the crops and grass were heavy with water from the previous rainfall - I was soaked from the waist down. The start of the path was 'dubious' at first but soon opened up as the farmer had cut a path through the rapeseed. Some minor damage to the top of the pillar and the centre of the spider is missing.

A troublesome "easy bag"! Wife was having hair done in Richmond so I nipped off to tick off this (apparent) simple TP. Parked up on the road right next to the footpath and walked through the corn field on the well defined path. I then followed the FP and went down the wrong side of the hedge. Luckily I was able to find a small opening that saved me retracing my steps. Then went along the wrong tramlines so ended up 10 ft from pillar. Retraced steps and found a way to join up with the correct tramlines. At the pillar was able to make the 3 ft stride to reach the uncultivated land around it. Nice views of the N Yorks Moors. Retraced route back to car. Long wet grass and crops meant boots and shorts ended up soaked. Beer in the Black Bull at Moulton afterwards.

Beware the Fae! Parked on a concrete slab by a furniture restoration place ‘The Fettling Fairy’. Had a quick look for someone to say hello to but no one present, just some great psychedelic music banging out. Returned to be greeted by said psychedelic fettling fairy who launched straight into “have you got the landowners permission”, which we always enjoy as it gives us a chance to extol the virtues of trespass. He then tried to argue that we were part of a constant flow of people who prevent him from working as he has to watch to see what people are doing. By now he was more frustrated with our big smiles that got ever bigger as we interjected his monologue with compliments and questions about the music as he rambled on about poachers, seemingly no longer concerned with being taken away from his work. As we got in our car and he walked away muttering he then turned back to us Columbo style “and another thing, dogs disturb wildlife”! Then put his dust mask back on and got on with polluting the air. I wonder if he’s even aware of the RoW?

The pillar was just about visible peeping out of a growing field (yellow at present) of oil seed rape, so reached with a little difficulty trying to avoid any damage to the crops; takes time, but it is possible to part the leaves whilst avoiding trampling down on the roots. Fortunately, it's only a few yards into the field. Top of pillar damaged on two corners, open cap, and all sight-holes open.
