Have been eyeing this one for some time, no obvious route from the east or south so approached from Buckside Knowe WNW of the pillar on the recently extended forestry road. I have now done quite a few of these and I think that this approach was the hardest yet, despite the dry weather the terrain was murder.

"A new entry and straight in at number one!" Yes folks, it's the Top of the Pops of 'Thank-Christ-I-will-never-have-to-visit-this-Godawful-place-again'. Canny views mind, (although you can't actually see the reservoir from the TP). Took the firebreak / track halfway between Skyspace and the Obsevatory, which peters out leaving maybe 30m of solid spruce to fight through before reaching the open moorland. And what moorland - really tough, unrelentingly arduous going. The terrain seemed considerably tougher going than getting to The Grun, or White Crags (previous top two in aforementioned chart).

Parking and route as per caroleengel. The final section from the 'stairway to heaven' boarded mtb route to the trig is indeed horrific. The snow cover meant I was never quite sure what I was stepping into and I was fully expecting a bootful of icy water at every step. Thankfully I got to the trig (and back!) with both feet dry. The splendid view made the effort worthwhile.

Cycled up the Lonesome Pine Trail from Matthews Linn. The duckboards allow for a zig zag journey onto the summit of Purdhom Pike and the views over Kielder Reservoir. Strenuous yomp to this trig.

From gated track to SE - NY 631913. Do not use any tracks that look over-grown - they are and become impassable (eg @ NY 627914). Next track west is good. Folow obvious route along tracks to March head NY613919 and follow excellent mountain bike trail and impressive boarding to get as close to trig as possible. Final 0.1 mile is Hell (was I getting tired of Kielder forest trigs by now?)

Walked across from Larriston Fells trig. It looked as though it could be a difficult trek through pathless bog and forest. Luckily we picked up a newish mountain bike track (a lot of it boardwalk) around 578921 on the Scottish border: this took us (in a slightly roundabout way) to within 300m of the pillar. The final sprint is wet and tussocky moorland. Like a lot of the trigs in the Kielder area, this doesn't get much attention (we were only the second visit in the last 4.5 years.

Me, Marie, Connor and Hayden went to visit Skyspace then Marie and Hayden went back to the car while me and Connor went to visit this pillar as it was getting lonley seen as it has not been visited in a long while! Now the going was very tough what with the spikey pine needles on the trees then the boggy tussocky ground once we got out of the trees, but it was well worth the visit.

Connor After a visit to Skyspace me and Connor set off for the trig but we soon ran out of footpaths and had to go off road, we followed the little beck up through the spikey trees.

Connor at the Trig It was hard going and Cold but we got there.
