Approached from the end of Mardy Rd, parking (safely) on bend in road as it goes off to Mardy Farm. Walked through a small light industrial area to the rife, then SE to the pillar, crossing the rife on a FB. The pillar sits on a sea defence embankment with stunningly miserable views across mud flats, sorry, the Mouth of the Severn, to N Somerset. It's been maltreated, badly! The spider and FB have gone resulting in considerable damage especially to the top. There is an EABM bolt nearby, but it's not really any consolation!

This was a surprisingly wild and rewarding day's walk between Newport and Cardiff. I gained the freedom of the estuary at New Gout, near the mouth of the River Ebbw and had several miles of mud, silt, boulders and flood bank to cover before reaching the trig pillar. After a quick inspection and picture of the trig I continued on, to the west, right around the perimeter of the landfill site. A quite treacherous mile through thigh high grass and hidden holes brought me to the road bridge over Rhymney River, where I was fortunate to find a gap to climb up through the bushes. Another rugged stretch of coastal walking further on took me around the steel works and to the deceptive comfort of the city outskirts.

The pillar stands on an embankment alongside the shore of the Severn to the east of Cardiff. The top of the pillar including its spider is missing but the FB S2307 is still in place. There is an EABM stud embedded in the concrete surround of an adjacent man hole. The site was reached by means of the path from Wentloog Avenue to the north west. It runs alongside a reen, parts of which are caked in thick, fluorescent green weed. The Lamby Way Landfill Site looms over the opposite bank. Several water fowl were seen and in places the waters edge was lined with reeds, rushes and teasels. Numerous butterflies and dragonflies were flitting about and a terrapin was encountered basking by the side of the path. The trig looks over expansive mud flats to the south. The Second Severn Crossing and the industry around Avonmouth can be seen up stream and Flat Holm and Steep Holm are down stream. The hills of North Somerset can be seen across the river and in the far distance are the Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills and the distant Exmoor Hills. Penarth and Lavernock Point are to the south west. The large tip lies to the north and the tops of some Welsh Hills are on the distant sky line. The trig stands on the boundary of the Severn Estuary SSSI and the Gwent Levels - Rumney and Peterstone SSSI.

This is our first trip back to this part of Wales for a year or so. Last time we were following in the footsteps of Maurice. Now we're following Father Ted, Rhayader Wanderer and of course Saginanivalis - there's a bit more information out there now! For this trig we parked on Mardy Road on the corner in front of Mardy House. Head west down the concrete track past the metal building with red doors and turn left at the bottom. You can see the trig on the earth bank in front of you, and there are plenty of bridges to cross the dyke. A bleak spot in some ways (rubbish dump and all) but still quite wild feeling, with the bird filled mudflats stretching out into the distance. That's enough of the poetry. Missing plug.

Output E 323229, N 177686, -36m hence ST2322977686. Curiously, altitude is way off the reported height by the OS. Access was very easy after parking at ST2291577948 then across the river on a footbridge at ST2287477946. Hug a perimeter fence to the coast line.

A bit of nostalgia associated with this bag. I must have walked past this trig in 1990 on my England and Wales coastal walk. Its also the closest trig to my childhood home. Other than that I am finding it a little tricky to talk it up. Its on the sea defences just outside Cardiff and has the landfill site inland and mud flats on the seaward side. Accessing the sea wall was none too easy either. Tried to get to it at Newton but a resident said there was no access there. Ended up going all the way east to Petrerstone Wentlooge and walking the 5Km back to the trig from there. A simple walk with just the one set of nasty guard dogs requiring a deviation onto the mud flats themselves. The trig is damaged at the top and the plug is missing. There is an interesting rainbow cube nearby advertising the web site of the landfill. For those of you not wanting such a long walk I’m sure there is probably access at Lamby somewhere.
