Pathfinder Guides - Peak District Walks (2009): Margery Hill. Uneventful stroll from Fairholmes alongside Derwent and Howden Reservoirs to Slippery Stones. Howden Reservoir was in overflow but views were restricted due to trees. There followed a more scenic climb across the spur separating Cranberry and Bull Cloughs to reach Howden Edge. Ground nowhere near as wet as I'd anticipated given the amount of rain we have had this summer. Bleak but far-reaching views from the trig. Looks like top layer of concrete (or possibly many layers of white paint) has eroded from one top corner hence recorded as slightly damaged (see photo). Nearby Margery stones add interest. Continued South along the edge to High Stones from where the pillars at Outer Edge, Margery Hill and Back Tor were all visible. Eventually descended to Cogman Clough then headed SW across Nether Hey before finally picking up the main reservoir service track back to Fairholmes.

I re-visited this pillar on 01 Aug 2006 after several earlier visits, the most recent being in Feb 2001. I found it much as I remember it, in good condition with very little erosion around because it stands on a small outcrop of rock. One new thing is a fenced-off area about 200 yards to the West of the pillar with a notice erected by the National Trust saying that the enclosed area has been identified as a Bronze Age burial mound and requesting walkers to keep out of the fenced area.
