This was an enjoyable start to the day - an easily reached pillar on top of a large rocky outcrop behind a water-filled quarry. Loses a point for the vandalised toposcope - would have been nice if it still had its plate on top. However, the pillar itself is in good nick, reachable from a set of steps up the side of the outcrop, enjoys a great view, and has easy parking in a nearby layby. A great start to a fun day's bagging.

From village of Markfield, first attempt was along lane west of the church to last house then directly north uphill but that went through someone’s back garden as they pointed out to me when I walked up their driveway. Was directed back to the church. From there footpath went north uphill onto a nature reserve. Followed path uphill to highest point. Overlooks disused quarry to north and M1 to south and west. Good views. A few feet to the south west is a toposcope which no doesn’t have a plaque, it probably did at one time. There is an information board about Hill Hole Quarry nearby.

Nearby is a toposcope, and thanks to the weather today it was of no real use. Still, the mist was finally shifting, so had a little bit of a view from this one. Nice! Pillar history: Built on the 9th of October 1938, at a cost of £4 7s 7d. Last maintained by the OS in June of 1978.

I've been wanting to visit this trig point for a while. Set on an outcrop of igneous rock in Leicestershire in the long disused Hill Hole Quarry. Park in a layby opposite the entrance gates to the Nature Reserve. The old quarry is water-filled and sensibly fenced off. The pillar is very easily seen on the outcrop and attained by some simple steps adjacent to a toposcope. A pity that it was so misty because the views from this lofty position take in the Cotswolds, Clent Hills, Cannock Chase to the South and West. The rock type quarried is NOT granite. Even a lay-geologist would spot that the rock contains much less quartz than granite and is dark in colour. That said it is supposedly an intermediate igneous rock diorite. However the main feldspar mineral is pink - suggesting orthoclase feldspar rather than plagioclase which would be the main feldspar in a diorite. The feldspar is pink stained plagioclase. The rock type is named Markfieldite because it is so unique. It is in fact a porphyritic quartz micro-diorite. It's quartz content used to suggest it was 'syenitic'. It is Pre-cambrian in age and forms laccolithic intrusions in the Charnwood and Nuneaton areas. Quarried for roadstone, kerbstones and roads 'sets' or cobbles in its day. Certainly worth a visit.

Now the techie bit for those with a radio telecoms background. My usual Bluetooth GPS receiver (BT-308) that I use with my phone running the great gpsj.eu software would not get a fix, I used my old original eTrex which isn't as accurate. When I dropped down hill a bit the BT-308 worked again, walk back up hill and watch it drop off. I think the nearby cell base station (see my photo) must have been causing receiver blocking, the eTrex is obviously better made.

The Trig Point with Cell Site Behind This picture shows the trigpoint with the nearby cell site behind. I think it was signals from this site on a similar frequency that prevented by GlobalSat BT-308 Bluetooth GPS (on top of the trig) working properly.

What a lovely spot! On a high granite outcrop in what is now a Hill Hole Nature Reserve. Wonderful views in all directions on a sunny day like this! Asphalt plug replacement. Traces of paint. All sightholes closed. Concrete base exposed on W/S sides. Adjacent toposcope explains what you can see but unfortunately doesn't give distances on it! Easy access along path out of Markfield village street.

As this one is just off a commuting route of mine it’s a surprise I have not visited it before. The trig and surrounding nature reserve looked great on this summer’s evening. There are a lot of information boards around and I found the one describing the history of the quarry quite moving as my grandfather also worked in a granite quarry, in North Wales, as a sett maker and succumbed to silicosis.
