About a mile and a half north west of Wootton Rivers, car park on west side of the road. Hill clearly visible to south west. Over stile and past a herd of cows who stood their ground and stared at me. Slightly unnerving. Steady climb about five hundred meters south west then another five hundred meters south along edge of hill fort past line of wonderful trees with knobbly trunks. At southern edge of hill through a gate and saw a bench overlooking the view. Fabulous views from here. No sign of pillar. Checking map looked as if it was to north of bench in the woods. Quite dense vegetation but managed to get through and started looking around. Worked my way back north and east. No obvious high point. After a bit of searching discovered pillar amongst the trees. A good coating of moss. Trod down a few nettles. Good FB number. Cap missing. No views at all. Returned to path over barbed wire fence to east of pillar coming out about level with the southern end of the avenue of trees. On the way back cows were still all around the stile so picked up a stick in case any of them came too close. Fortunately not required. Just reading other logs, agree that it does look a bit fat, thought so when I first spotted it.

This is definitely a trig to visit in winter. Accessed pillar via pathway behind the bench... I say 'pathway' - more like a small trail where it looked like someone had been before me which was almost completely overgrown again. I am six foot two, which is far too tall to fit under all the low branches in this wood, but somehow I managed to find the pillar quite easily once I'd entered the wood. A lot more easily than I found my way out again... Pillar is covered in moss, and (might be my imagination) looks in need of a diet (not unlike myself). Otherwise in good condition, and is still accompanied by a (now rather faded) Coke can. Forgot to look for 2p pieces - sorry! 9/10 mark would have been a 10/10 if this pillar wasn't such a bugger to get to at this time of year. The view is certainly a 10/10 - one of the best I've seen. And the walk up from the car park is also very pretty, as is the walk across the hill to the Giant's Grave trig. It's just the immediate surroundings of this pillar that let it down, though it was certainly an adventure, and I have stories (and scratches) as a result.
