Walked along the ridge from Giant's Grave trig to get to this one. Got to the bench (circled in red on the attached satellite view) dedicated to Angela (Goo) Barklam, but it being early autumn, the path into the woods behind the bench was completely overgrown & totally impassable. So I went through the barbed wire fence & into the L-shaped woods at the E corner (blue dot on the attached satellite view). Once inside the woods, I found the trig after wandering around for a bit (since I did not have a GPS) not very far away from where I entered the woods. Bigger than usual trig, in good condition, largely covered in moss, centrecap missing, all sightholes open. I left a 2p coin in the front sighthole for the next visitor to find. On the ground was the Coke can mentioned by G1ANQ from his visit over 3 years ago.

Martinsell is the most beautiful of hills, and looked its autumnal best today. Its presence dominates the Pewsey Vale, and for me it is the crowning glory of the Marlborough Downs. Agree with Griefmiester that this pillar is fatter than the average! Covered in lichen, open cap, & all sight holes open.

Trig is located within a wooded area and is covered with moss. Car park for rambles/dog walkers a short distance NE, then a gentle trog up onto and round the perimeter of Martinsell hill fort, and finally a push through dense undergrowth in the wood to the trig - not easy to spot, the GPS was really handy to locate it. No views from the trig, but a short walk out to a bench seat gives lovely views south down to Oare and over the Vale of Pewsey to Salisbury Plain rising on the other side of the Vale.

Made a very early start from my temporary home in Surrey to reach this one just after 5 a.m. I used the car park to the north east and just followed the public RoW and permissive path. Once through the gate close to the bench seat, turn right into the wood and keep going until you reach the pillar. Itís overgrown and not easy to spot in the gloom. The pillar is structurally sound but the centre plug has been removed. There are no views from the pillar but from the nearby bench seat, there are good views to the south.

Pleasant approach from the car park to the east: through access land, along the ramparts of the hill fort and then crossing barbed wire fence into the woods at closest approach to the pillar. The pillar is sited in the woods inside the hill fort, a large part is covered in moss, it lacks a plug and has FB S1500. Trees now obscure any views the pillar once possessed. A circuit of the hill top however affords fantastic panoramas: south over the Vale of Pewsey to the scarp of Salisbury Plain; north over West Woods to the Marlborough Downs and east over Savernake Forest to lower, flatter land stretching to the horizon.
