I try to have a "cultural" day once a week, so I ended up at Appleby Horse Fair. I arrived with expectations (so not like me), and left with somewhat deep disappointment (romantic notions?). Largest gypsy and traveller gathering in Europe is what drew me in...mmm. Anyway driving back home I noticed this wee pillar and thought, I will have you. The field was like the Saraha and I had to penetrate the cows + bull sitting around the pillar...I found a chink in their armour! Dedicated to climate change, with perhaps 20 years left on this earth I would rather enjoy the present climate. Put some more coals on the fire!

Parked north of the trig by the farm gate. Donned wellies for this one, but surprisingly dry underfoot. Pillar has its original cap in place with raised lettering - I like them like that. Just one sight-hole open. Good all round views of Westmorland. Earlier had visited All Saints Church at Orton with its massive white tower, and then following this trig wandered around attractive Appleby In Westmorland. Then back in the car to continue my 500 mile drive, freshened by the spring air of Westmorland.

Parked near the gate into the field. The small pond drains across the field to the gate so it was a little bit wet there but dried out further up the hill to the trig.

Parked up at the FP gate and headed through sodden sheep field up to pillar. Nice views all around at the TP, but the walk to and back had to keep head down and watch every step to avoid stepping into ankle deep water. It was akin to walking through a paddy field. Pillar was also a bit tricky to reach as it was surrounded by water. Beer in the Kings Head at Ravenstonedale afterwards.

Visited twice, the Shap drizzle makes it a boggy spot - on return sun and heavy atmospheric greys. Walk between visits is a beautiful return to the Lyvennet - with the landmarks of yesterday's walk ever present. We're rewarded with an unsurpassed panorama of High Cup and a huge stretch of the North Pennine. Howgill and the Yorkshire edges nearby. Could have stayed here all day - but Orton chocolates call.

I approached from the SE taking a curved route rather than straight up in order to avoid a potentially boggy patch. Sheep and lambs in the field. (Can't get my photos to load right way up.)

Took wellies but not so wet underfoot today. We disturbed a fine flock of Texel sheep, where tupping (mating) was in full swing. The eye catching view was of the first sight of snow high up on Cross Fell.

I parked in the gateway on the B6260 at NY 6413 1505 at the start of the PROW, taking the view that I could easily dash back to the car if a farmer needed access. Once over the delicate wooden gate and into the sheep field it was a simple walk up the mound, although the pillar could not be seen until I was about 50 metres away. Pillar in good condition with original cap with thick raised letters and adoption plaque on SW face; FB faces NW; SE sighthole open, all others plugged. Good views of surrounding countryside and hills.

Short detour from PROW. Sheep still in the field and still staring...couple of massive Shap granite erratics in the field. Stunning views of the Pennine escarpment and almost directly up High Cup Nick.

Not moorland now, but a cattle pasture. Easily visited, just as well as the thunder was about and I had just bottled out of two other trigs involving long exposed walks and I wanted at least one visit. Intact and OK - carries an adoption plaque..
