Only my third brick built pillar. Took the steeper but shorter walk up from the footpath to the south. Was very grateful for the memorial bench inside the copse, as I was well out of breath from climbing up! A commemorative marker in the copse celebrates Queens Victoria and Elizabeth II. Pillar in good condition, barring the numerous scratches on the toposcope that adorns the top surface (obscuring the spider).

The stone built pillar stands next to a plantation in the open grassland of the summit of a wooded hill between Gloucester and Ross-on-Wye. The trig’s foundations are exposed by about eight inches, it has FB S5151 and the remains of an asphalt plug line the centre of the spider. The hill top was approached by a pleasant walk up through the woods from Glasshouse in the east although it is possible to park nearer. The pillar has a fine view to the south over the Forest of Dean and the Vale of Berkeley. Nearby trees restrict the view in other directions but from elsewhere on the hill there are fine views to the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains, the Malvern Hills and across to the edge of the Cotswolds. From the northern slopes there is a view over rolling hills towards Brown Clee Hill in the distance. The heath and grassland at the top of May Hill is owned by the National Trust and has been designated a SSSI. The clump of tall pines at the summit was planted to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and the younger trees for Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee.

A very pleasant spot and a very pleasant trig pillar constructed of local stone; probably another National Trust special.

Awful weather (driving drizzle and mist), and who should we meet up there but Richard Ashcroft filming the latest Verve music video. I kid you not - certainly one of the strangest things that I've ever seen while Trigpointing! Incidentially, the OS database records the existing trig as being the second pillar on the hill. The old one was located on a raised area of ground at OSNGR 369600.906E 221229.938N, about 50m to the south of existing trig.

It is a distinctive prominence in the Gloucestershire landscape. If you go up on May Day you will find out why it is so named.

A lovely place.. This hill is a major landmark in the northern reaches of the West country. You can see the topknott of trees from all over the place, especially from the hills back home in Herefordshire, and when I moved to Somerset, it could be seen again. Its the highest point of the Forest of Dean and the trees were planted for one of Queen Victoria's (no mean hillbasher herself)Jubilees.
