A short but stiff climb, passing some friendly sheep & dismantled railway line. A beautiful autumnal day so busy at the top. Had to wait for some children to get off the pillar before i could photograph it. Amazing views, glad i brought my binoculars this time. Could make out Pen y Fan in the distance. Always a wonderful place. Overheard a woman, who was pointing at the Severn, tell her friends that it was the Wye. Laughed to myself.

The stone built pillar stands next to a plantation in the open grassland of the summit of a wooded hill between Gloucester and Ross-on-Wye. The trig’s foundations are exposed by about eight inches, it has FB S5151 and the remains of an asphalt plug line the centre of the spider. The hill top was approached by a pleasant walk up through the woods from Glasshouse in the east although it is possible to park nearer. The pillar has a fine view to the south over the Forest of Dean and the Vale of Berkeley. Nearby trees restrict the view in other directions but from elsewhere on the hill there are fine views to the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains, the Malvern Hills and across to the edge of the Cotswolds. From the northern slopes there is a view over rolling hills towards Brown Clee Hill in the distance. The heath and grassland at the top of May Hill is owned by the National Trust and has been designated a SSSI. The clump of tall pines at the summit was planted to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and the younger trees for Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee.

A lovely place.. This hill is a major landmark in the northern reaches of the West country. You can see the topknott of trees from all over the place, especially from the hills back home in Herefordshire, and when I moved to Somerset, it could be seen again. Its the highest point of the Forest of Dean and the trees were planted for one of Queen Victoria's (no mean hillbasher herself)Jubilees. Visited when walking from a bus stop to a NGOC Saturday event at Lightning Tree.

Evening visit to rustic pillar beside fenced conifer plantation. Nice in the sunset!
