A very misty visit. If there was livestock in the field, they didn't see me and I didn't see them. Granted, I could only see the trig once I was within about 5 meters of it.

The gate at the road is still padlocked for some reason but easily climbed and a short walk to the pillar. The field was empty with the exception of the trig and a large pile of silage.

I'd been here before, but the gate was padlocked and I had both the dogs with me, so took a long range shot of the TP from the gate and decided to come back another time. Today was the day and lo and behold the gate was unpadlocked. Further bonus was the enormous mountain of manure has almost completely disappeared. Apparently it was used up by the Tory Party and the Labour Party between them for their manifestos in last weeks election. A very quick skip there and back over the muddy field nonetheless. Good views SE to the snow capped high ground of the N Yorks Moors.

Visted with P61 we parked up at gate SW of pillar easy amble on track straight to pillar very dry under foot,manure pile still present.

Open spider. Manure heap nearby - could hear dogs barking (sounded not too far away), so I could not settle at trig - pretty quick visit.

A bit of a poor thing really, acheived on a 60 mile ride into the teeth of a howling gale. The view north over Hamsterly Forest was rather pleasant. The afore-mentioned ordure had at least dried !

HISTORY: Pillar completed 28th September 1947 costing £5.16s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NZ42/T41 in 1948. Levelled for height in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in November 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from NW. Parked on SE side of Windy Bank Road with two wheels on verge (NZ069293), through gate and walked around field boundary to trig. At NE edge of grazing field beside boundary wall. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces 323° NW along boundary line. Vented through NE and SE sight holes. Can be viewed from the road if you dont fancy climbing the wall - its only about a hundred yards from the road. No views to the north or west due to the forest.

No pride of place on a hill top for this sad little pillar. It's stuck between a wall and a dung heap in a small field, hidden from view unless you actually go looking for it. It's in reasonable condition I suppose but the centre plug has been removed leaving a hole in the top that will swallow an Etrex. The view east, over the wall, is the only one worth looking at.
