This one's been on my todo list for years and didn't disappoint. Parked at Cow Green and followed the track to Birkdale. At the footbridge over the beck took the shooter's track to Little Cocklake then followed various quad bike tracks through the bogs and a couple of groughy sections. The splendid vista to the west is revealed at the summit, in fact in every direction the views are excellent.

HISTORY: Pillar completed with FB 10801, 31st May 1960 costing 26.1s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NY71/1 within the Appleby block during 1961. Levelled for height also in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in July 1983. SITE VISIT: Three trig 20+ mile circuit starting and finishing in Dufton. Up via Dufton and Blackstone Edge, joining Pennine Way at NY746268. Continued eastwards along the north side of Maize Beck then turned sharp left for the final almost 1 mile climb northwards to the summit. Been robbed of two flush brackets. Originally 10801, then 12113. This stone built pillar is all but destroyed, just a scattering of loose stone blocks. The pillar bolt is still in situ. The top and spider lie on the ground nearby. Found Father Ted's note from 14:30. Full 360 open outlook to surrounding Pennine tops and across Cumbria to the Lake District. Continued via SE edge of High Cup Gill for Murton Pike.

A reasonable mark being given to this one becasue of the location rather than the sad condition of the trig. Hard to tell the casue of the damage but it certainly looks ill. The only positive is that the top now provides a good seat on which to eat your dinner. I walked over from Langdon Beck Youth Hostel where I was staying - well worth a stay. Final approach was from the SE via the shooting hut over rough ground and then grass to the top. Fine views.

A long walk from the Cow Green Reservoir CP but well worth it. Walked the track to the dam then the Pennine Way to just beyond the farm at which point a track heads off north to a (not visible) new, stone built shooting hut. From there, follow quad-bike tracks past the shooting butts to within a few hundred metres of the summit. Far easier an ascent than we had anticipated. Return was via a different line of shooting butts but still brought us back to the hut. Shame about the badly damaged pillar.
