A nice wander up to this from past the works and a good clear route most of the way. Saw several Hares and then disturbed a short eared owl that leisurely flew up and circled around before heading out of sight. Views fantastic and better lower down on descent.

From the S, parked large layby at sharp bend in road. Bit of a gnarly section to begin with over various stiles and tussocky sikes before an obvious ATV track takes you up to the flat-ish hill top. Decent views in all directions but for some reason it's just not the most enthralling of hills. The lime kiln just S of the pillar does at least add a point of interest.

Same route as others past the water works building. Only came across one gate so a fence and a wall to negotiate. A bit breezy today, nothing special at the top and views better further down.

From NY 7500 4247, large new layby. Grassy track keeps to west side of mapped RoW to access land at NY 7518 433, then a direct line to the trig; 1 stone wall to negotiate. Pillar has no centre cap and is unplugged (1 allen screw extant); all sight holes open.

Cap missing. Very windy. Up from near 458 spot height metalled track leads to waterworks then quad track. passing mine working and lime kiln near pillar.

A 1hour 30min return walk from the bend in the B6277 road at ny750425. I picked a glorious winter day that showed the true colours of Alston Moor. PROW has some barbed wire fences that require some dexterity to clamber over without ripping of clothes. This pillar commands panoramic views. Some interesting kilns en route. Worth spending time exploring the Whitesyke and Bentyfield disused mines.

Plug missing, all sighting holes open, centre mark visible. Immediate surroundings nothing special but good distant views in all directions. Approached via the intermittent track up from High Hundybridge.

Parked on bit of old road near Shield Hilltop. Across road and through gate to use track to access moorland. Gate and fence to negotiate to gain Dodd top then onto trig and limekiln.

Drove over from Weardale on snowy road. Had planned to park at summit of Nenthead-Garrigill road but not passable in a hatchback, so drove round via Alston, parked on the south side and walked up via access land. Great snowy views across to Cross Fell. Called in to photograph an icicle clad Ashgill Force on the way home, an interesting drive in -10C over the moors to Middleton and then over to Frosterley.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 11th August 1951 costing £10.6s.5d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NY86/16 within the Hexham block during 1953. Levelled for height in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in June 1983. SITE VISIT: Detected hints of GOMLism on the NE slopes of this hill at Galligill with their petty notice and lack of RoW. Access was taken from 500m further east. Parked on verge at NY762446. Followed boundary lines of grazing fields SSW to access land above then west to summit. Pillar in good condition. OS cap very recently stolen, brasswork in centre still gleaming. Rusting Allen bolts lying on top which I duly reinstated finger tight. Flush bracket faces 337° NNW. All four sight holes open, pillar bolt visible and photographed.
