I'm not the biggest fan of walking in thunderstorms. The thought of a walk in the Yorkshire Wolds years back still sets me into a sweat. So this gets an 8 as a just about did it. After the castle the exotic locale and banks of dandelions entice me. Although we do set off from west and not east as planned the better to eye the lightning which stays hunkered on the plain to the south east. Gorgeous place, walk back through the oft road signed The Hidden Corner, a pretty spot, the views south towards Grassington are stunning... with a fair few black grouse seen on the return journey to home. Touching little plaque too... special place.

Walking the Wensleydale Wander, a 23 mile walk from Leyburn organised superbly by the Leyburn Rotary Club. Blessed with good weather, good views, good organisation and good company (a mature lass who rides a Harley and attends motor bike rallies all over the country). A quick sprint off the route and no horses on the gallops was worth the diversion and a better option than Penhill. My rescue Lakeland is given this pillar, she managed the distance with no problems after a day on the Buttermere fells, furthest she's walked.

By the time we got to Ravenstonedale all hell broke loose with the wind and rain and tents were falling everywhere. Home then, but even a 4 day hike in this troubled year is a win.

Pillar in good condition, but slightly damaged at the ends of two spider 'vanes' and a couple of small dents in the main 'body'. A lovely spot, but a damp foggy day today, so nothing to see. Returned via the track; realised that as there was no one about, I could have easily ignored the 'this is not a road' signs and just driven to within 100m of the pillar.
