We parked in Kettlewell and ascended via the charming little chimney scramble north of Gate Cote Scar and then just followed the track by the summit ridge wall. The pillar commands spectacular views of upper Wharfedale - Great Whernside especially. It has been in the wars, though - it's heavily weathered, chipped and cracked through and missing its cap. With a bit of snow on the ground, and lovely clear air, this was a superb visit and a wonderful choice for my 300th pillar on my 40th birthday. We returned via Knipe Wood for a pint in The Bluebell.

A 2 car point to point walk taking in 3 Trig Points, this was the third. Left my van at Kettlewell and then we drove to Halton Gill in Ceri’s 4wd and set off from there, then followed the whole line of the ridge between Littondale and Wharfedale back to Kettlewell via Horse Head, Firth Fell and finally Middlemoor Pasture. Not the best weather, views very limited. Very boggy underfoot in places. Nonetheless an excellent days walking. With Lucy Frost and Ceri Evans.

Very nice views of Buckden Pike, Great Whernside and the southern Dales. More or less same route back apart from a small diversion to look at the lime kiln. KD Lovely little circuit from Kettlewell Bridge using permissive path by side of road to reach the FP over the fell end towards Hawkswick to gain the summit ridge and following the wall N before branching out to the trig about 50m east of the wall (no path). Lovely views on a warm, sunny day with a nice gentle cooling breeze and plenty of butterflies inc Painted Ladies. Descent by following wall N to first FP which finishes with a steep squeeze through the final wall of crags (can be avoided by farm track & BW)

Visited during circuit of Wharfedale Three Peaks, second of four trig pillars bagged. I could have shortened my day by dropping straight into Kettlewell but the trig was worth the detour down the ridge from Birks Fell. Pleasant enough situation, nice views into Wharfedale but the summits of Great Whernside and Buckden Pike were by now obscured by cloud. The pillar is somewhat decayed.
