Whilst the nation was having a "knees up" following the coronation on Saturday, I went to visit an area of wilderness without a road, farm, pylon, wind farm or telegraph pole to be seen on the fells. On a good day you won't meet anyone and same goes for a bad day. Having a pop later at the Howgill 1,500 ft hills (31) and needed to look at a couple in the far North. A perfect day and an easy to reach pillar from Carlingill via Archer Hill and Rispa Pike. I sit on the fence regarding the monachy, but yesterday was "pomp" to the extreme, which we Brits are rather good at. I bless this pillar to King Charles III.

Parked near Archer hill farm in Cotegill. Walked south pasting the farm to start of open access near East Gills. Tried to follow the tracks shown on the O.S map but not as straight forward as I thought. Lots of Quad bike tracks to follow and did manage to find the main track down to Langdale Beck at the ford. The beck was a little high due to recent rain, ended up with a welly full of water. From here there is quad track which goes all the way to the trig point. Used the footbridge to cross the beck on the way back. Lovely sunny day at start but soon clouded over on way back.

An epic walk in the Howgills (Wainwright's No15) on a 100% blue sky day. Parked at Gaisgill and ended up on Peatmire Hill before dropping down into Uldale and following the exquisite beck up the valley to Blakethwaite Bottom. From there we skirted round to Simon's Seat, where you would half expect there to be a pillar, before dropping down 400' and clocking up an extra mile to Middleton trig. A bit of a mundane name in an area of outstanding beauty, with the low sunlight shadows accentuating the folds of the hills. The only living things we encountered on our 9 mile walk were 6 tiny ponies munching on their hay amongst the ruins of Long Gills farmstead..

Parked and ascended by the route described by clochandlighter/peregrinus logs.Very cold on top of this one fine 360 views feels remote and arctic today saw two fell ponies and foal on way up the ridge. trig has two sides smooth and two rough plug missing. On way back after crossing the pack horse bridge featured in wainwrights guide, returning i didn't fancy the very steep ascent up the fell so followed the a track which followed the river valley which leads eventually above the treeline after gaining height above the valley, from here the small plantation on the cowbound track could be seen.Heading for this keeping a large sheepfold building on left brings you back on track saving a load of time/effort would take this route if I came again as the tree valley is well worth seeing.

Parked in the Clochandighter memorial parking space and walked up via the Peregrinus pioneered route using Cowbound Lane (less a lane, more a linear swamp). Not sure if it is a public right of way, but if it isnt then the patch of access land next to it would have no way to access apart from via helicopter! Lovely views from top despite being lower than much of the Howgills. Descended to Langdale Beck to shorten the route back but, like Ted, landed up with wet feet as there isnt a fording place. Should have gone back via the ascent route using the little bridge over the beck at the bottom end of access land.
