Not that there is a metal plate but that would be its FB number. Interesting to see the bottom of a trig, shame the top isnt there though. I walked passed it 3 times wondering if that was maybe the trig.. it was.

Was in the area, so stopped by to see if I could find it. I was stood for a while looking straight at it. Not much left, such a same. Bagged it anyway.

The toppled remains. I couldn't tell it was a Trig until I got right up to it.

Drove into rugby club car park and walked round club house. Wondered what I was looking at, it certainly didn't look like a pillar until I realised that its the base of the pillar that was once buried. Only the stump of the pillar with bits of sight holes remains.

Located close to the Sandal Rugby Club House what remains of the pillar looks a sorry sight. I suppose if there's a positive in this story it is that you can see something of the inner workings of the concrete casting.

(1700) Been meaning to visit this one for a while, so made a slight detour to make sure I bagged it today. Very little of the actual pillar now remains, as what is still there is mainly foundations. Makes you wonder how and why it ended up like this since jwrouse visited it back in March of 1998. And the destruction is ongoing it would seem - compare Andy West's photos from Nov 2018 to mine. Bag this one whilst you can? Pillar history: Built on the 23rd of June 1947, at a cost of £10 13s 7d. Last maintained by the OS in August of 1985. Marked by the OS as being destroyed in October 1998. FB was S4080

Approx 20 m east of original location on edge of playing field next to the gate. Located behind the clubhouse toppled and very damaged, but the bolt and innards of sight holes are visible. Rugby game in progress. The gate man let us in any way after some charming by the bagging assistant who also provided a succinct Trig Bagging 101 to get their interest. One had been going there for 47 years and "had never noticed it".

Located in rugby club grounds strange one this as its mostly the footings of the trig whats left.however there is the structure of the upper center bolt tubing remaining its the first time i have handled a center mark up close.

Turn into fitness club car park, which is bigger than it first appears, head to the right where a small road runs down to a new building there is a gate with the lumpy remains just left of a red gate post at side of rugby field.

Well worth a visit. Still recognisable as a trig. Rare chance to see the inner stud and wood framework. If anyone can tell me the height above sea level it was originally at, then thanks.

Think this trig could do with it's own category. You can definitely tell this is the foundations of the trig with a small amount of the trig still attached. Sight holes can be seen and a bit of the whitewash. Answered my question about what the inside of a trig looked like. Easy access from the Sandal Fitness club car park.

No problem parking at the Sandal Fitness Centre. Same as comments below, no trig but the big lump of concrete is a crazy substitute. Contrary to the comment by MikeG in 2003 about the trig symbol not being shown on current OS maps, it is on my Explorer 278, Sheffield & Barnsley 2006 (see photo).

W edge of rugby field just E of car park, at edge of access road. Base on its side, with rivet still in place. No trace of pillar, but the base is still present. 2011: uploaded montage including Jon Rouse 1998 pics of the pillar still standing (but apparently relocated to position against clubhouse wall).

As Ted says the base is the only section thats left. Go into the Sandal RFUC (yes thats RU not RL, spit & hiss) car park and a road wanders briefly to the right of the club house towards the training pitch. There it is, sat bereft of its former glory, but no less loved for that by those of a certain persuasion.

Revisited following Griefmiester's report. Foundations of trig moved a few yards from original location: upper centre mark with wooden surround, remains of sighting holes and base of angle irons. Concrete down to the position of the lower centre mark but the rest of the pillar is missing, presumed demolished. Not clear why they bothered to keep this part but it would have been non-trivial to excavate. In Trigonomy, JWR records the trig as S4080, destroyed by OS Oct 1998. Revisited 27 Sep 2009 - passing by so checked just in case further remains but nothing else found.

The pillar was close up against the wall of a building in the car park of a sports club on Standbridge Lane. Photographing the FB plate was a bit tricky because of the proximity of a heavy cast iron contraption - probably a barbecue grill. It appears that I was fortunate to have visited and photographed it in March 1998 because a later report says Destroyed by O.S. Oct 1998. See also later log by peregrinus 01 Jun 2007.
