Short pine thrash at end but firebreak most of way. Went SW for c 250m on grassy track from Mochrum house , then, at track junction, 250m west on mapped firebreak to junction. Then NE on unmapped firebreak c 750m up t0 300m - rotten gatepost, between the two mapped summits. Here you plunge/ crawl into very thick pines for c 30 m, trying to approach the trig more from the east and, suddenly, you reach a surprisingly large, tennis- court- sized, levelish, grassy clearing with trig and good views. Estate parking c 100 NW of road end to SE of summit at NX731745.

From NX 7297 7489, although the estate does provide parking partway between here and the end of the public road. Tracks to NX 7218 7471, then a break runs NE, but at some point there's a need to push through relatively well-spaced new plantings. Once reached, the pillar sits out in a cleared area with extensive panoramic views. Centre cap missing, tube plugged with a composite disc; all sight holes open.

Last of 'SIX Little Galloway Gemms'... What a struggle. The scary tree covered hill left for the end of the day after five other delightful hills. First approach from track to north suddenly gets me shin deep in hidden water within 50-60 metres into a forest ride. I curse at my now sodden feet. Retreat and drive back round the track to south side and plod up through the forest in the twilight and wander with difficulty peering through the tree trunks for potentially higher ground and rueing having left my map in the car and stupidly left all three of my compasses at home when I'd felt sure there was one in the glove compartment, and because I was Marilyn bag focused, I failed to make a mental log as to whether this hill has a trig pillar or not!! Start to feel a hint of unease in the slightly gloomy silence of the forest and impending sunset, but I push thoughts away and focus on the peaceful beauty and gingerly tramp further forwards northwards, peering through for hints of higher ground. Wander roughly north another 60-70 metres. Looks like higher ground ahead, looks like 4-5 metre higher mound and a slight clearing. Hooray a pillar on top. Sixth hill of the day. Bronze plate number S7977. Three sevens to end the day. Look at my watch. 7.42pm. seven hours and six times seven minutes. It's also about seven minutes after sunset. Number nerdiness to end the day. A happy bunny as I head south and eventually find the faint track with bits of undergrowth and brambles, that led up from the car. The toe of my right boot catches a bramble stalk. Being in shorts it then pulls the spikey stalk vigorously across the bare calf of my left leg. I wince and cry out in my head as I look down and see an inch wide tear scratch. "Didn't think you'd get away that lightly without a little stinging pain to remember me by," whispers the collective consciousness of the trees and hill around me.
