Followed FP for great diagonal climb up very steep eastern face of hillside on faint track which got a bit hands on near top. Glad I had a pair of poles with me. Then gate and two grass fields to summit. Pillar a little off summit for some reason, possibly archaeological. Glad there was enough time to get down in day light. Wish I'd parked alongside little chapel near foot of FP, the main road was busy at that time of day.

End of the afternoon north west of Welshpool diagonal path tracking up the steepish East slopes is feeble, sloping and with lots of low-level bramble which I spent ages meticulously cutting back on way up to make sure it was safe for return down and wouldn't trip me up Glorious top and took video of the quiet scan across fields from NE to SE

A stiff and sweaty climb up the footpath diagonally across steep hillside before doubling back to pillar. Panorama of surrounds and a chance to really get into the holiday mood!

The pillar stands on the grassy summit of an isolated prominent hill to the west of Welshpool. The trig is mostly painted white. It has FB 10347 and the spider is plugged by a metal cap with raised narrow lettering. I parked at Coed Cefn-golau to the south of Four Crosses. The hillside was ascended by the path on its eastern craggy scarp. The path is narrow and the surface is loose in places but thankfully it was clear of bracken. There is a 360º view over innumerable green rolling hills from the trig. It looks over the valleys of the Einion and Banwy to the east. The peaks of Snowdon could be seen in the north; the Breiddens and the Long Mountain in the east; Stiperstones and Corndon Hill in the south east; the ridge of the Kerry Hills in the south and Cader Idris in the west. The summit has some small banks and ditches associated with an Iron Age enclosure.

A great little hill, that I've often passed by on the way to larger things further west; it's well worth an hour's walk for the view from here, and the improbable footpath that finds its way back down the eastern scarp of the hill.

Not to be recommended up the direct diagonal path at this time of year as the bracken is over head height and trying to shove you down the hill. Trig in excellent complete with plug and a xmas wreath. Excellent views. Both footpaths to the north are non existant from the top other than 20 yards of the 2nd one so back down the main path.

Despite closeness to the road parking can be tricky. Ascent is not for the faint hearted from the south aspect. Geologists will revel in the nature of the rocks - shelf sediments tending to deeper water from the Lower P Palaeozoic times and also the dip/strike relationships. I think that Sagina nivalis (2000) needs to examine the rocks again - they are sedimentary not igneous. An excellent location!

Good condition, original plug, fabulous views to Cader Idris and the Berwyns. Private, but regularly visited with hop over wire fence at top.

With no obvious stop points by Gelli I turned round and pulled into a sloping gate to take stock only ten minutes later to be hauled out by the farmerhaving got well and truely stuck a few minutes banter later he was happy to let me park "so long as you dont block in the machinery. The Fp up across the face is as said elsewhare little more than a sheep track and very loose in places, add the summer bracken and it is realy one for decent boots especially in the wet. Trig itself is in good shap just below the main summit.

Excellent views from the pillar which is just East and below the summit.Initially thought i would walk in from a RUPP to the NE ,this has recently aquired several new stiles ,sadly it still need waders or a canoe to cross the Afon Banwy! This approach would be fine i think in mid summer only, maybe they are planning a bridge or stepping stones otherwise the new stiles a bit wasted! Anyway retraced and drove around to the South of the pillar,a few fields and a sharp climb through braken takes you to the top.The views are 360 degree and worth the effort.

This is an absolutely superb little pillar, standing proud on top of the abrupt hill of Moel Bentyrch near the A458(T) road. There is a fotpath that runs nearby from the farm at Gelli, but this runs northwards up the eastern flank of the hill and is steep, overgrown and narow. I was wearing trainers and no socks, and it was not an easy walk; it may be better to tackle the hill from the footpath from the north. The views form the top are superb and made the climb well worth making; many of the surorunding high hills are clearly visible.
