Up the track from Hillock initially scattering many partridges, pheasants, and surprisingly one peacock. Grand views from the top shared with a white hare. Cap in place with deep lettering, and one sight-hole open. Beautiful January day. Recently, I’ve been playing a song by Jackie Oates called ‘The Joy Of Living’ (written by Ewan MacColl). He wrote it in his 72nd year after failing to climb Suilven, and realising that his mountain-walking days were over. The song is a wistful and rather sentimental one, but seems to me to be a perfect hill-walker’s anthem. So I mused as I walked back down the hill.

What a lot of peat haggery between Mt Battock and here! Easy descent via track to road at Hillock where several very loud dogs stay, fortunately not loose.

Trig pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with stamped lettering. Flush bracket faces northeast. A substantial climb from Glen Esk, but rewarding views to Mount Battock, Clachnaben and Sturdy Hill once on top. Visited and photographed 28/06/2000, GRP.
