Bizarre nav error brought me here and shows the dangers of relying on technology. Having visited Waddesdon Manor I had one aim left for the day....to bag the Berkshire top trig. So I asked Kim to enter Coombe Hill into Google Maps, not realising that there are 2 x Coombe Hills SW of Aylesbury, both with trigs!!! Of course we arrived at the wrong one and, none the wiser, I set off N from the CP, keen to get there and back as quickly as poss. Sure enough, the monument site offered stupendous views and the trig foundations are all that is left, but Boy, was I confused, until I got back to my map and discovered the error! Well worth the trip up here though.

Big monument, no trig!

I was up here doing a couple of geocaches. The view were exceptionally good as there was no haze or mist. The horizon was clearly visible all round. This is the second trig point Ive visited that had a viewpoint plate built into it (the first being TP2614 Crooksbury Hill). The centre plug is missing and the hole filled up with debris but apart from that the condition is good.

This trigpoint is interesting in that it is set on a pillar which has directional distance markers on the top. It is next to a large Boer War memorial and has fantastic views on a clear day, although when we visited it was misty and trying to snow! The concrete pillar is cracked in places, hence the slightly damaged rating. The trigpoint is very close to the geocache GC171, which is the 2nd oldest in the country apparently!
