Third of 5 trigs of the day, cycling, and feeling tired, a long ride back to Sheffield... Slogged up (walked) ploughed up section of field to crest and found trig on ridge quite easily. Panoramic views, power stations N and E, Derbyshire in W. A1 traffic noise ever present. What an area, great countryside and picturesque villages, never realised it was so pretty. Used 1:50000 map, which didn't show a trig marked 1km further S on the ridge, only spotted it later on the 1:25000.I didn't research it, but that's the fun of being out and about for me, the 'hunt'. It's an excuse to go again another day.

Every field in the upper Went Valley seems to be on view and to those who call this home the view from Went Hill summit is just awesome. Castle Syke Hill (you call this Hundhill incorrectly appears to be throwing everything into its extra metre of height, the poppies of Brackenhill appear in their eternal respect of those who gave us this chance and the pureness of this ancient forest serve up a heady cocktail. Onto Upton Beacon then, and the top of our valley having the knowledge that Robyn de Hode really did once ride this corner of Sherwood Forest we know only now as Barnsdale. Don't just bag the trig though the fun is heightened by the Went Hill traverse. If you only bag it then you have missed the trick, go on go when nightfall is close and take on our Mr Hode in the woods of Barnsdale. Outstanding.

A line of three different things in Yorkshire. Moor Lane Trig at 245ft high looking north to windmill and the slightly more powerful Ferrybridge C power station by the River Aire.

Like ted I also tried to find the trig on Went Hill just south of here as detailed on the OS map (see photo) but similarly only found the concrete base and a bit of rubble (see photos) and no evidence of the trig. The trig isn't in the TrigpointingUK database. Like ted I found the view well worth the visit, there's no ROW but you can walk all along the ridge from this trig (Moor Lane), there's an obvious path through the woodland. ****An update to my original log is that when revisited on 15 July 2006 the walk along the ridge and through the woodland to the ROW on Went Hill is now clearly marked as a tresspass and threatening prosecution (didn't stop me & Sue though!).****

My copy of OS 1:25000 Explorer 278 (Edition A, 2000) shows another trig symbol on Went Hill, less than a mile south of the Moor Lane trig, at SE476185. Visited 3 July 2004 - theres a convenient footpath up from the road. Nothing found except a large (approx 20 ft long) overgrown concrete base a short distance into the field which I assume matches the caption 'Reservoir' on the map. Nothing of trig significance found but the detour is worth the trouble for the views to SW.
