Revisit. Since my last visit over a year ago, there has been a wildfire in the area on the 19th July 2022 (i.e. during last summers heatwave). It took over a day to put out and dampen down, and it was concluded that it had been caused by the sun having ignited dry plants. Fortunately, despite the fire having come to within just a couple of feet of both the trig pillar and the Old Man O’Mow, both survived unscathed. However, the surrounding area was completely devastated and remains blackened. Amazing work by the firefighters, as at one point the fire was reportedly out of control, and it took six fire engines and additional relief crews to put out. The area has a history of wildfires, including one back in June 2019.

A absolute stunning rural area on the outskirts of the Potteries with views as far as Manchester. With all the strikes going on at the moment/future I have to gift this pillar to the Jacob Cream Cracker lot who are striking big style. If your going to do something, do it properly.

Parked outside the Mow Cop Inn, which is on the junction of Congleton Road and Castle Road. Walked a few hundred yards up Castle Road, and you turn right down a path. A few hundred yards up the path, it goes around to the left. A few hundreds yards further up the path, you will see a National Trust sign for the Old Man O’Mow. You will find a footpath to the left which takes you to the Old Man O’Mow. Just before you get to it, you will find a path which takes you up a very steep and tricky climb to the top of the hill behind the Old Man O’Mow. There you will find the pillar. Got there at about 6pm on the 24.7.20. Pillar is in excellent condition and the views of Congleton and the CHESHIRE plains are spectacular. Visited Mow Cop Castle at about 6.45pm the same day. You will note from my photos that the pillar has been cleaned up and repainted at some point between 2018 and my visit

Not sure of date. Parked by the canal boat thing and headed northish with the intention of crossing the railway at Ackers. Pleasant enough along the canal, but we missed the path to the crossing and ended up with a dull walk along the road. This meant that the route to the top was my old stomping ground of "The Killer Mile". I think my PB was about eleven minutes. Today it was at least half an hour. Luckily the pub at the top is now closed so there was no-one to jeer my failing legs. Now in years gone by I would have turned round at the top and headed back down for another go. (Honestly.) This is the first time I have looked around. The castle is worth a mooch. And while you are up there look to the north! Spent a good while looking for the pillar and in the end suspected it had been fenced off, so set off down. Further revelations. Old Man of Mow is a real thing! How did I not know that? And just behind - the pillar. What a spot. Headed down the South Cheshire Way and found where we had missed Ackers. For the life of me I can't remember where we went for a drink. Sorry.
