Logged in passing on the Gritstone Trail. Haven't been up here since a post-grad student field trip whilst at Keele University in 1975. Pillar is a little reluctant to be found. You have to ascend up from the main path along the bottom of the Old Man of Mow and attain the ridge. Views are 360 and stunning. I would say on a 100% visibility day they extend into Snowdonia and way north & south. A top trig!

Not sure of date. Parked by the canal boat thing and headed northish with the intention of crossing the railway at Ackers. Pleasant enough along the canal, but we missed the path to the crossing and ended up with a dull walk along the road. This meant that the route to the top was my old stomping ground of "The Killer Mile". I think my PB was about eleven minutes. Today it was at least half an hour. Luckily the pub at the top is now closed so there was no-one to jeer my failing legs. Now in years gone by I would have turned round at the top and headed back down for another go. (Honestly.) This is the first time I have looked around. The castle is worth a mooch. And while you are up there look to the north! Spent a good while looking for the pillar and in the end suspected it had been fenced off, so set off down. Further revelations. Old Man of Mow is a real thing! How did I not know that? And just behind - the pillar. What a spot. Headed down the South Cheshire Way and found where we had missed Ackers. For the life of me I can't remember where we went for a drink. Sorry.

Walked via South Cheshire Way from Ackers Crossing to reach this trig. Easy access from nearby road. Good view of Old Man of Mow.

Spent a while with my little spirit level trying to work out the height of the Old Man (a SubMarilyn summit). Conclusion - top of OM is about 100mm higher than top of trig pillar. At least it looks like about 100mm - didn't climb the OM to check:-) FB level is given as 335.58m (Trigonomy database). I didn't measure the height of the trig top above the FB but the OM will probably be just under 337m. In my excitement I forgot to note top cap of trig, but pretty sure the engraved one pictured by fasgadh is still in place.

It was a nice day, so I went again. One of my locals, and a favourite. Tried to get a picture with Jodrell Bank between the pillar and the top of the 'Old Man'. Also, the old folly is worth a look, the other side of the lane

The Pillar and The Old Man Jodrell Bank telescope is between them
Folly So who built it, and why? I should know, but I don't

The Old Man.. Its still there!
