No cap, mossy, wholly hidden from view inside good rectangular stone wall shelter from the wind. Needed today. Been cold and windy all week. For the less than diligent. This isn't the island summit. That's 3 metres higher and about 500 metres to the north.

Parked at HU 3336 6602. Mapped track to HU 3251 6503 where LH fork goes to trig and RH to hill top. Took the later, then across the rough for 500m to the trig. Rejoined track at HU 3240 6489 for return. Pillar has no centre cap or plug; rear sight hole sealed, other 3 open. Extensive panorama above the high shelter cairn walls.

Drove the car up the track past the Mill Lochs so only had half a mile to reach the top. Pillar is very sheltered in the stone enclosure, must be the only one in Shetland with moss growing on it!

HISTORY: Pillar completed 19th September 1959, cost not on record. Computed by distomat survey as secondary triangulation station HU46/DM/15 within the Shetlands block during 1961. Levelled for height also in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in May 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from northeast. Parked by NE side of unclassified road just NW of cattle grid at HU331661. Walked 200m back down road to climb the hill via the mapped track known locally as Peat Road. Various abandoned vehicles along the route. The track continues nearer to the summit than the maps indicate, thereafter it is just a short steep climb to the top. South Ward. Pillar in wind shelter. Column in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces east, ~96°. All sight holes open, innards filled with debris. Full 360° panoramic view.

I started out on the track from near Cumle and round the Mill Lochs. At HU 3180 6406 - where the track started to descend to Burki Waters - I branched off to the ENE up a valley to meet the end of the track from Knowe where there is the remains of a Land Rover at HU 3218 6416. From here it was a fairly short walk up to the summit where the pillar sits in a strange square stone enclosure with a half-partition wall presumably shielding the trig from fierce winds! FB faces E; W sighthole plugged, all others open; plug/cap missing. Good views of Papa Stour, Vementry and the mainland. Foula can just be seen poking out from behind Sandness Hill (TP5807). Esha Ness with its lighthouse (TP9643) and The Drongs can be seen to the NW and NNW respectively. Ronas Hill (TP5725) dominates the view to the north, while Saxa Vord on Unst (TP5826) can be glimpsed to the NE behind Sullom Voe Oil Terminal. 3.4 miles round trip; 45 minutes ascent, 40 minutes descent.

I'd had an early start and needed to do a lot of road walking to get over here from the camping böd in Voe. I ascended on the track to the southeast and it was then quite simple to cover the rest of the distance to the pillar. The weather was threatening to close in, but I still had reasonable views to the north. Clear enough to pick out the very dramatic Drongs, several miles away by Hillswick. I headed down on the track past Loch of Bottoms and back onto Mainland at Roesound.
