Was in the area mountain biking at Bike Park Wales. Drove to bag this one, got the car to the top of the lane (where all the rubbish is dumped) and then cycled the remaining few hundred metres. Itchy.

Walked up very steep road from Heolgerrig to top of road. It's possible to drive almost to the top but it maybe difficult to turn back round with all the rubbish across the road. Easy walk from road to trig point.

My first ever trig point! Lived nearby for 10 years but never seen it before. Climbed over a gate at the top of Heolgerrig, and walked up the hill by the masts. I think that the land is private, as it's currently up for sale. Was very windy! Great views over the surrounding area.

I parked in the village at the end of Heol Gerrig to the north rather than risk driving up the track. It also gave me a bit more exercise. Strolled up the lane to find it blocked with flytipping rubbish near the point of turning off towards the mast and trig. A nice stroll up to the trig. I had just taken my photos when a 4x4 appeared. Not sure if it was the farmer or not. He didn't appear perturbed by my presence.

Apparently replaces an earlier pillar at same GR but no mention of that in the OS dBase, so would be interesting to know where that information came from. Also, interesting that the Mynydd Aberdar Auxiliary, a Buried Block, located approx 330m SSW doesn't feature in T:UK. Anyway, the anomalies aside. The pillar was accessed from the badly fly-tipped minor road to the SE. It has an asphalt replacement plug for the missing top cap; the RHD side sight hole is sealed, other 3 open. I was treated to a lovely 360deg panorama as dawn was breaking over Merthyr Tydfil.

Walking from Merthyr Tydfil via Mynydd Aberdar then along Taff Trail via Aberfan to Abercynon then train back to Merthyr Tydfil. Ascended via track passing to the south of Winch Fawr but part of this is private and not a recommended route to gain the summit. Access would be far better from the end of the road just to the south of the trig point.
