Drove up as close as I dared on narrow roads to take pic of the site. Trig lost to workings here. Great locations up here but not enjoying the traffic on the narrow roads! I'm sure the drivers coming the other way are thinking exactly the same!

Presumably buried under many metres of mine spoil if if not destroyed by mining. The area has recently been smoothed by lots of bulldozers with ditches added, possibly for tree planting. Anyway , rubbish described by others not apparent. Very unnatural summit. Nearly dark. Many tracks.

From CP at Sirhowy country park, stoney track all the way, following route of 2014 LDWA 100, back then it was wet and miserable but today it was a bright, sunny day, some compensation for the regular piles of fly tipped domestic waste and motorbikes buzzing about. Walked to gps location of lost pillar which is just below the 370m contour. With the pillar FB recorded as 356m, it suggests that even if the pillar was left in place, it would be 12-14m below the surface.

Lovely walk up through the beech woods and pine forest from Cwmfelinfach. Very steep though! Not a pretty sight at the top.

This is easily in the top 5 worst trig sites I've ever visited. And at 3AM in the mist and rain. Not at all enjoyable, but still an eye-opening experience.

Assuming the trig was erected before the mining spoil was dumped here, my theory is that the pillar is still present but buried under many metres of spoil. Either way it no longer graces the hill, and also the name no longer applies (Mynydd y Grug = Heather Mountain). A despoiled and ugly area.

The former trig position is now on the northern slopes of the spoil heap. I guess it may have been on the highest point at one stage before mining took place but now its about 65 meters away from the high point. Nice sunny morning with views over Bristol Channel and no 4X4s.

I already knew it was missing but was passing on the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway so had a look at the spot where it was supposed to be. Not a particularly pleasant place, the common is badly scarred by motorbikes and 4x4s and the ground work doesn't make it any better. It was very foggy on the hill when we got there which was probabaly a good thing as what I could see wasn't very pleasing on the eye.

We knew it was missing, but had to visit anyway. The area where it would have stood is considerably lower than the nearby hill. I assume the hill has been quarried. Lots of shingle and slate about.
