This pillar sits in thick hedgerow between two fields, but I wouldn't even attempt trying to find it from the Eastern field (like I did originally). Instead go through the Carlton House entrance and keep following the road up towards the mast. Then it's over a fence and follow the hedge line South West. The previous advice on here about going 16 metres past the telegraph pole is a pretty good guide. The field did contain a herd of twenty or so alpacas when I visited. I'm not sure if these beasts can get nasty, but I was quite glad they found me so uninteresting. I'd suggest winter is the best time to visit this pillar as so many previous triggers have struggled locating it amidst thick summer foliage.

The barrier was closed at the entrance to Carlton House so walked through the car parks aiming for the radio mast. Over gate into field and uphill along east hedge boundary. Not obvious. Checking on here, tip to count 16 paces from the telegraph pole (further up than the mast but same side of field) was pretty much spot on. Headed into hedge through head high ferns and nettles. Just spotted pillar in hawthorn hedge. Rewarding battle to push vegetation aside to get photographs. Worth extra point. Reasonable views to the west from the field. No views from the pillar. First of nineteen today.

Well this one took some finding despite all the advice here. The bracken was head high and it took me ages to stumble on it. I reckon it is double the distance from the stile and even knowing that it will still be hard to find. Only a 2 as no view but I would like to give it a 10 as I feel so satisfied that I didn’t give up but found it. As I write this it is some 4 hours and my legs are still burning from nettle stings! Such fun

Good directions. Left mu bike at the stile and could just see the pillar through a dense bramble and nettle thicket. Made a strategic retreat with only a few scratches and nettle stings.

No problem in parking in car park and going over style into field. Totally overgrown and impossible to find - so many thanks to CJO below. As he says, go to power pylon and on west side of hedge pace out 16 paces SSW along hedge - and then battle into nettles and brambles. Not sure whether it was worth all the stings and cuts.
