I am volunteering or visiting all the Cumbria Wildlife Nature Reserves. Parked in Ravenstonedale by the school, free with plenty of spaces for several cars. Smardale Gill was my priority, but diverted off the railway path above Scandal Bridge and straight to Nettle Hill. A small, dumpy stone pillar in vgc with panoramic views in all directions. A very lonely and isolated area. What's not to like? Gifted to frog spawn....built a pond on my allotment in autumn and had 4 large bunches of spawn last week. Somewhat diminished since then, I suspect birds.

Parked up in the Smardale Nature Reserve car park and walked along the country lane to Crosby Garrett. Followed the beck through the village, under the small viaduct to the last farmhouse where the FP's lead up Crosby Garrett Fell. Too the northern track up to a pint level with the pillar then cut across the rough grass towards the marked top of Nettle Hill to bag the TUMP, then just the final 100 yards or so back North Eastwards to the TP. Took a different track back down which was easier going underfoot. Nice walk back to car then off to The Sandford Arms for a pint.
