A quick detour from my cycle ride, and wandered across the field to bag this one. A fairly nice spot overlooking the rolling hills of the High Weald.

Parking opposite cottages at TQ 6474 2593. Walked NW along minor road to a field gate (TQ 6459 2598). Followed field boundary initially then straight across a ploughed but fallow field. Original centre cap retained, lightly indented lettering; RHS sight hole open, rear plug degrading. Views in a roughly 135deg arc SW thru N.

Walked down bridleway from N - a sunken lane full of bluebells to start with, then up bank into arable field. TP on slope and not at highest point. Original plug, and vgc with good rural views to W, but felt a little uneasy having to pick my way over the young crop so didn't hang about. 2nd cuckoo of the day calling.

A return to this site and it was clear that my previous visit drew the wrong conclusion. This time however the field had recently been ploughed. The pillar was clearly visible from many parts of the edge of the field. The nearest I could get with a clear view was about 250 ft, but as far as I could tell the pillar is in good condition. The pillar is actually located below the summit of the hill.

Couldn't find it 5th Aug 2004  12:26  by Alan Grove

Found my way into the open field on top of a hill where the pillar was supposed to be located, but found nothing. My GPS indicated that I was within a few feet of the TP, but I saw nothing. The field had a somewhat derelict appearance, but it has been ploughed in the recent past. The latest OS maps, both 1:50,000 & 1:25,000 show the pillar still in existence. Additionally, information available from Trigonomy refers to it as still there. Log ammended 22/9/04. Considered the original condition rating of "Definitely Missing" as being too harsh. There is a reasonable possibility that the pillar still exists. Will revisit the site when possible but hopefully someone else can help to sort this one out in the meantime.
