Parked up by one of the tracks through The Stang and followed that through to the moorland, then up to the county border and the pillar. Great views all around, right over to the coast, and especially the moors as the sun shone on the heather. This pillar was adopted by some friends of ours and they checked up on it for many years, pleased that we could report back to them that it is still in tip top condition. Simply retraced our route back to the car, and then a beer on the terrace at The Punch Bowl at Low Row.

Detour off Barningham Trail

Approach along rough bridle way from just pastt Long Green Farm then along track. Expansive views across towards Teesdale and over towards the Howgills. Heather burning taking place further downslope so visibility hindered a bit. Pillar in surprisingly good nick, retains original centre cap and intact spider.

Retrospective log. I am certain of the date but I did not note the state of the trig pillar. Parked by long green farm and walked up along side the wall. Found the nearby geocache.

On County Durham side of the boundary. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces 335° NNW. 3 sight holes open, NE sight plugged, innards filled with debris.

Curlew,redshank,lapwing,oyster-catcher, and various small brown unidentifiable birds. Noise of heavy duty automatic weapons from nearby Feldom army range. Gave the trig in the range a miss, maybe another day. Went on to look at the cup-and-ring marked stones in nearby Osmaril Gill and on Eel Hill.

Plug intact, hooks protruding above top surface, 3 sighting holes open. Showers passing over. NW side of the wall forming the county boundary. Right of way through Stang Forest closed for a rallying event - noone about so I ignored the signs.

vgc, metal cap, shallow letters. Track from ESE continues to trig, which is NW side of wall at summit; pasture; the usual GOML clamour of Curlew, lapwing etc. 15 dead rabbits en route!!

Lovely moorland views. Walked through Stang Forest to get to this one on a lovely summers day. Pillar in very good condition with all metalwork intact. Met a couple who had walked up from Barningham and snapped them along with the pillar.

White(ish) pillar beside dry stone wall on How Tallon tumulus. Old gatepost with carved initials resting against wall which forms the Durham/North Yorkshire boundary.
