After coffee and cake at Kirkby Stephen and a visit to the rather fine independent book shop (nice change to Waterstones) park in gateway off the main road. Next stop in the wintry rain is Smardale and a long gorgeous ramble over to Nettle Hill - some glorious apocalyptic looking showers moving in round the Howgills to Nine Standards and Wild Boar - weather doing what it so often does - the lower commons stay sunny. Superb murmuration just near Sunbiggin Tarn to top it all off.

Seems a strange place, no real line of sight views to anywhere. Third of six different species of trigs today, introducing non-trig friend to the world of trig-spotting. So he got to see an active station, a rivet, an FBM, a (very special) pillar; a curry stool and a concrete ring.

Parked at field gate to the SW and walked back 200 metres along the busy road to bag the FBM. Kirkby Stephen (1976) FBM is a 3GL style concrete pillar, rather than a 2GL style granite pillar, so the original pillar was NOT reused at the new site. Kirkby Stephen (1976) FBM was evidently constructed and levelled before the original 1912 FBM was destroyed.

Parked with care in the blocked-off layby on A 685 at NY 7502 0577, directly opposite the FBM. The FBM itself is easily found high on the bank above the SE side of the road close to the wall. It's in good condition with the usual OS plaques and bolt on top but missing its height tag.

Good condition FBM with missing height tag (paint pot also gone....) standing beside a wall on the embankment of the A685. Parked a bit down from the bollarded layby which looks a lot like a section of old road. You could get into that space heading north. Good views for an FBM!

Came up from Kirkby Stephen railway station. Half a mile SW of the old FBM you can easily find this atop the banking, near the wall on the opposite side of the road from the (sort of) bollarded off lay by (why?), as CHRISBOMBINGTON says, the gaps are big enough to get your motorised chariot through them to park up. Ok view to the north east. Re-visited with the better half 02/01/2010.

My second FBM.I was passing so stopped for a cold and chilly look. Thanks to previous logs and photos it was easy to find at the top of the bank.Watch out for the green mossy bits they are quite damp at this time of year.

Rod Sladen identified the site of the original (1912) Kirkby Stephen FBM as NY75830626 and described it as "destroyed 1976; replaced by new FBM Kirkby Stephen (1976)". The original location fits much better with the line of wall brackets north from the Moorcock Inn. Site visited and, as expected, nothing found. Presumably lost to road improvements. The rebuilt FBM appears to have used the original plaque.
