Thouight this would be a handy detour from the M6 to take advantage of the dry summer of '18 on this normally wet trek.Turned out to be a lot of narrow country roads into the unknown with at one stage a warning sign of free range children. Enjoyed the view from the pillar of the Bretherdale valley that I previously had no idea it existed, despite regularly passing within a few miles

I initially approached in the car from the north along the road past Ewelock Bank. However at the old ford at Eskew Beck House the road was blocked by a closed gate. I detoured round and took the minor road through Bretherdale instead - a very tight little road in places! I parked just off the road at NY 5876 0505, a little way inside the area of the Access Land on North Side. From here it was a tramp across the grassland (boggy in places) up to the pillar. The distant rumble of the M6 and the cold easterly wind were the only things to break the tranquility and bleakness of the place! Pillar has a chunk out of the top on the SSE corner and has a metal cap with thick raised letters; FB faces SSW; ESE sighthole open, all others plugged.
