Parked close to spot height 137. Walked back along the road and around the quarry so to get a better view of the Nig yard and the Cromarty Firth where myself and Mrs A1M have both worked anchoring the rigs in place before leaving those types of boats a few years ago.

I think it's still in the same place as the previous log - by the southern corner of the remaining block of trees.

Such a sad looking pillar after being moved. Slightly leaning and with chunks out of it corner to the right of the flush bracket. Really hoping it can find a new how somewhere close. Lots of interesting hun emplacements nearby and a great view over the Firth.

I suspect that a further moving of the pillar has occurred as the quarry continues to encroach eastwards. Certainly the earlier 'move' grid references had me heading into mid air! Whatever the pillar still exists and is in good shape but of course, no longer fit for purpose.

Situated on edge of Castlecraig Quarry. I parked at the roadside opposite to the quarry entrance. Walked around outer perimeter of quarry eventually reaching pillar. Pillar has a chunk missing out of one vertical edge and seems to have been moved probably as a result of the quarrying. The view from its present site is nothing special but the views of the Cromarty Firth from my walk to it were very fine. Maybe it could be sited on the headland rather than its rather sorry present location.

Parked opposite Quarry entrance at the top of the steep hill and walked around inside perimeter of quarry - (no activity today). Nozzer reports trig has been moved yet again. It appears to have been lifted and placed on the corner of the neighbouring field next to the 5 bar metal gate. It does not look in any immediate danger and seems to have been placed with some care in the upright position. Suspect this is not its last resting spot! Continued on to visit the WWl & WWll gun emplacements on a bitterly cold day with limited visibility. Very interesting hillside especially relating to its history.

Fortunately this pillar has been saved from destruction from quarrying by it being moved a short distance - approx 45m to the SE. It now site proud with its concrete foundations above ground, albeit at a slight tilt, next to the quarry boundary fencing at NH 81409 69017. Parked at Castlecraig and accessed scrubby woodland at NH 8142 6925. The pillar has lost its top cap and has no plug; there is minor chipping to the top screed; front and LHS sight holes open. In addition a substantial lump of concrete has become detached from one vertical edge. With Carole Engel.

Log #69. Bought a motorbike a couple of years ago from a guy up here in Castlecraig. Approached from Nigg ferry, struggled up the hill in first gear in my one-litre Corsa, and parked at the entrance to the quarry. The quarry has been expanded in recent times, and there is a GF Jobs cabin at the entrance, along with numerous heavy machinery dotted about and signs of other recent activity. I skirted around the western edge of the quarry, taking the long way round to the trig. The trig itself is even more exposed than previous pictures, as the grass has been completely dug up with mud and digger tracks surrounding the area around the pillar. Not much in the way of views from the pillar, so you're better off taking the footpath from Dunskeith to Castlecraig for that. Motorised egress through Castlecraig to Nigg, then on to Culnaha for next pillar. [ExP-66/MiP-0/BM-3]

HISTORY: Pillar completed 24th June 1955 costing £17.15s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NH54/T58 in 1955. Levelled for height in 1971. Last maintained by the OS in April 1988. SITE VISIT: Approached from northeast. Parked west side of road beside blank gable of farm building at NH819694, where the yellow infill for this unclassified road expires on the present map. My 1991 LR21 shows this road continuing as yellow westwards to Nigg Ferry, road now signed private at farm. Followed demoted road on foot to highpoint at woods then through fence and clockwise around flooded quarry. Grazing land. Tertiary station pillar in good condition, with extended foundation to combat erosion by livestock. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces west, ~276°. Vented through west and north sight holes. 225° panoramic view from SE clockwise to north. Remainder blocked by adjacent woods.
