Parked on little used road in west canvey. Took several attempts to reach this point, returning with beter footwear to navigate the ditch and reeds, which was surprsingly deepl and hard to traverse. the point itself has a nice little marshy clearing around it

Expecting an easy roadside TP. Along dead end lane on west of Canvey Island, at the end looks like a scrap yard. Pulled over a few metres from the gates to the yard. Steep embankment on north of road. Expecting pillar to be on the top. Hmm? Checked on here. Not much to go on. Down other side of ridge into field. Not sure whether to head west or east. Decided to go east towards tree line. After about a hundred metres beside field boundary started walking north then spotted pillar tucked away in amongst trees beyond a ditch full of tall reeds. No obvious way through. Carefully treading through reeds and ditch, luckily dry and not too deep but disappeared below height of reeds for a moment or two. Seems extraordinary place for pillar unless embankment was built after it was put here. Low elevation too. Secluded and protected. Spider and cap in place. Partial view to west only. Raised S prefix, OS plaque in place.

Parked at the end of the lane, over the banking and across the pasture to the field drain. The rushes were dry and easily stopped down so i could jump the drain to the trig.

Tricky finding a way into this one. Due to the recent wet weather the drainage channel on its W side was deep and full of tall reeds, so backed off from there and got back to the road where I'd parked. Eventually forced a way through the hedgerow due S of the trig, then a tortuous way through fairly dense scrub and immature trees. Unsurprisingly the pillar was found in good condition. 'BSM' style FB; original top cap has been retained, indented lettering; LHD side sight hole open. No views.

Very relieved to find this one as it's quite a way from N.Wales to come specifically looking for trigs on islands. Approached from the west after following the seawall round from the bridge. Enjoyable 5hr circuit of Canvey from Benfleet station.

The hawthorn trees and briars are growing around this. The trig is still in good condition but I fancy it is tilting slightly now - which is not surprising given how waterlogged these Essex marshes can get.

I came here while in the area doing the Southend ua tops because on the map it looked like the kind of remote place that might give up great views over to the river and beyond, disappointed to say the least but as mentioned below the trig itself is in very good condition.

I am not surprised that this Trig is in such good condition, a more uninteresting , remote or desolate location in Essex you are unlikely to find. Little chance of vandals or Trig plug plunderers wandering by here any time soon. If you break your leg jumping the ditch I think shouting for help will be heard by no-one. This is also a GPS passive station.
