Asked at the farm house if it was ok to walk to the trig as live stock was in the field - one big bull who had been fighting and was in a sulk and was very sore so he wouldn't be interested in us, and he wasn't !!

Couldn't spot a safe place to park and the trig field was full of cattle. Decided to ask at farm if it was (a) ok to park (b) ok to visit trig. Permission for both readily given.

Tried to find trig walking from Noss Head lighthouse, but did not have enough time, however saw it in the field as we drove by.

Log #17. Grabbed this one on return from lighthouse. Over one gate and skirted round the perimeter of the field to trig. The ruined castle to the NE is worth a visit. [ExP-17/MiP-0/BM-0]

Approached via nearby castle, left direct to road. Both walls difficult with barbed wire.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 24th September 1946 costing £7.17s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station ND25/T24 in 1952. Levelled for height in 1954. Last maintained by the OS in June 1981. SITE VISIT: Approached from northeast. Parked NW side of road by end of long passing place just east of field gates at ND378543. Over gate, walked anti-clockwise around perimeter of Roadside Cottages straight to trig. No further closed gates of fences to cross. Convinced this is the northeast end of a baseline that was never to be. Grazing field. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces southeast, ~135°. Vented through NE sight hole. Open outlook apart from surrounding buildings. Owner occupier farmer is visitor friendly.

Parked in passing place opposite farm drive and over locked gate into and across grassy field. No sign of life in nearby farm, although vehicles visible in the drive - was half expecting a GOML shout. Unremarkable location and for some reason photos of the pillar didnt come out on my digital camera, bit odd.

A strange number for this area. Awkward access - found a gap in the stone wall by the lane where there wasn't any barbed wire and then nipped across the field. In unmown grass field with sheep. Original plug with deeply indented letters. Traces of paint visible. Lovely views seaward along the Caithness coast.
