A pleasant corner of Oxfordshire. Approached from east, turned off A423, past golf course. Then turned north west along lane towards church, signed from the road. Pulled over on side of lane near church close to start of footpath on north side of road. Looked along hedge line near start of path. Pillar not immediately visible. After a bit more map studying headed a little further to the east and then spotted pillar just on the north side of the hedge. Quite a coating of lush moss and ivy, removed the ivy, moss was quite attractive. Cap missing. Views to north across farmland.

It was a lovely walk along the Ridgeway from the outskirts of Wallingford to Nuffield (passing en route the Grim's Ditch pillar which I had logged some 13 months earlier). Sadly this particular pillar did not live up to expectations. Like several hedgerow pillars the rear face is inaccessible but the FB does at least face outwards. The vegetation has grown back much as I thought it might have, so I had trouble initially spotting it. The hand clippers were gainfully employed to trim thistles, brambles and nettles but this pillar sad to relate is very ordinary.

Nuffield A quick trim and the pillar is revealed.

This is a lovely part of the Ridgeway and I enjoyed a pleasant walk. The 6km walk from the Thames is entirely uphill and it's easy to see why there's a trig here. Finding it today is a little challenging: from the Ridgeway I waded through a meadow, occasionally stumbling over ant hills and brambles buried in the long grass. Then I walked up and down the hedge until I eventually saw the trig, almost invisible in the hedge. It's hard to imagine that at one time there must have been a good view from this spot.

Also portaloo in church yard, which is always welcome during trig hunting! (The cleanest, nicest-smelling portaloo I've ever been in!) Entered field at public footpath opposite the church, then walked along the hedge ESE until we found the trig. The trig was in between the telegraph pole and The Old School House, it was completely covered in under / overgrowth & ivy. Spent a long time clearing it all & scraping the trig clean of moss & lichen. Once uncovered, trig was found to be in good condition, centre cap missing, centre tube filled with dirt & debris, some concrete missing from the top edges, front & left sightholes closed but plugs deteriorating, right sighthole open, could not check rear sighthole as it backs into the hedge. FB faces the field, how convenient! I left a 2p coin in the right sighthole for the next visitor to find.
