After about two miles south east of Cheddar on A371 turned south west onto country lane signposted for Nyland. Road went around the north perimeter of the hill, parked on roadside on south west side of hill about 100 metres beyond the gate for footpath up onto the hill. Map indicated footpath went around the southern edge of the hill but through the gate there was an obvious path heading east and directly uphill. Quite steep for last 150 metres. Excellent all round views, north towards Mendips, west towards Brent Knoll and south east towards Glastonbury. Raised S prefix, number slightly chipped at the bottom but possibly a fault with the casting. Cap missing. Geography book hill with pillar.

The pillar is situated on the summit of a small steep sided hill rising out of Cheddar Moor and is easily reached from the minor road to the west. It has FB BsM 3257 and the remains of an asphalt plug. The site offers a 360º panorama. The fields of the surrounding moorland appeared to be extremely soggy with many of them partly submerged beneath large puddles. The line of the Mendip Hills from Brean Down to beyond Pen Hill can be seen to the north and the east; below the scarp lie the towns of Axbridge and Cheddar. Ben Knowle Hill and Glastonbury Tor are prominent in the southeast with the outline of the more distant hills of east Somerset visible on the skyline. Wedmore Ridge rises above Wedmore Moor to the south with the Polden Hills beyond. In the west Brent Knoll lies beyond the moors and a low ridge; the misty outline of the Quantock Hills could just be made out on the horizon.
