Circular walk from Draycott, Westbury Beacon first then here. Seems farmer happy enough with walkers accessing hill top - sign asks horse riders to stick to the path, but no similar plea to walkers. Short steep ascent from E, across cattle pasture then following woodland/pasture bdy. Pillar found in resonable condition, just minor frctures to top screed. Cap missing, residue of asphalt plug; all sight holes open; BSM-style FB. Lovely panoramic views: Steep Holm and Brean Down; Brent Knoll; the Levels; Glastonbury Tor etc.

What a lovely little hill! Parked to the SW, along the right of way and a friendly wave from the farmer, steep huff and puff straight up the good path. Fabulous views all round for our second of the day. The hill (for those who were wondering below) is a little inlier of the Burrington oolitic limestone (same as the base of the ridge) and is the remnant of another thrust sheet that stands above the younger (and softer) Mercia mudstone which makes up the plain.

There’s room to park on the verge close to Quarry Farm, where the path up the hill starts. Quite a steep climb that had my pulse rate up a bit higher than normal but the views are worth it. Today had started out very misty and although the mist had pretty much cleared, it was still too hazy to make out distant features. The pillar is in generally good condition but the centre plug has been removed. There are the remains of a tarmac replacement around the edge of the open hole.

The pillar is situated on the summit of a small steep sided hill rising out of Cheddar Moor and is easily reached from the minor road to the west. It has FB BsM 3257 and the remains of an asphalt plug. The site offers a 360º panorama. The fields of the surrounding moorland appeared to be extremely soggy with many of them partly submerged beneath large puddles. The line of the Mendip Hills from Brean Down to beyond Pen Hill can be seen to the north and the east; below the scarp lie the towns of Axbridge and Cheddar. Ben Knowle Hill and Glastonbury Tor are prominent in the southeast with the outline of the more distant hills of east Somerset visible on the skyline. Wedmore Ridge rises above Wedmore Moor to the south with the Polden Hills beyond. In the west Brent Knoll lies beyond the moors and a low ridge; the misty outline of the Quantock Hills could just be made out on the horizon.
