a re-visit. Followed the cycleway from Matlock railway station to Darley Dale. Immediately after crossing the Derwent took the lane alongside. Two gates to pass through, with large sections of the surface between stripped of tarmac (result of flooding according to local). Right and doubling back at next junction, up steep hill, and through passage for other than walkers or cyclists blocked by road slipping into adjacent field! Left bike and took gate to right to climb hill. Pillar in excellent condition. A gem of a location. Noted the pillar is named Oaker but village and farm named as Oker on OS map. While taking a few minutes to look around was passed by a teenager running barefoot! Returned to Matlock via Snitterton.

I approached the trig point driving uphill on Oker Rd from the direction of Snitterton Hall. A short distance before Kirby Lane the road was blocked due a road collapse somewhere in the area. From there I took the short walk up Kirby lane and then up the steep hill to the trig point. It provides panoramic views in all directions of the countryside. The pillar is in good condition and at some point had been painted white though it is fading. The flush bracket and spider are both in good condition.

A smashing little hill overlooking the Derwent Valley and the industrial landscape (a UNESCO site). A trig pillar sits at one end of the ridge and Will Shore's sycamore tree at the other end. Two local brothers each planted a tree on the hill before parting. One brother prospered and his tree survived, the other failed and his tree died. Wordsworth wrote a poem dedicated to the tree. 3/6 given to Fray Bentos pies, still manufactured and take me back to memories of Vesta curries. Fray Bentos was slang used by soldiers to mean "good". Looking at the ratings, not anymore.

By the way, the nearby hamlet is called "Oaker" but that's reached by "Oker" Lane. As for the hill... "Oker Hill is thought to be the site of an ancient untrenched hill fort or hill station built by the Romans Legions. They had ousted the Britons who previously lived there and worked the local lead mines. The hill was given the Latin title of Occursus or hill of conflict. Oker is obviously the shortened form or corruption of this name. It is also referred to sometimes as Oaker Hill. "
