This flag has flown on this hillside since I moved to nearby Cassop some five years ago. Speaking to the farmer he informed me that the the flag was erected on the triangulation pillar by two brothers from the nearby town of Thornley in memoriam of a brother they had lost serving in the British army in the gulf War. July 2017 the flag was in a sorry state and hadn't been maintained in a long while so I took it on myself to replace it with a new one subsequently replacing it every six months. There is a Facebook page friends of the flag

Revisit-cycling trip. No cattle about today, so could have taken route at south side of the hedge which roughly parallels the A181. The hill (which is a Hump), has an 'obvious' summit on which the trig sits. Trig is still supporting a flagpole, with the England flag flying. Summit area is pleasantly knobbly & has a feeling of wildness about it. Spacious 360 deg views (although distant views in greyness today).

I parked on the verge at the road junction and made my way around the side of the arable field rather than in the field full of frisky cows. A bit squelchy but otherwise OK. I'm guessing the flag is quite regularly replaced as its in such good condition. The cows in the field with the trig only got frisky as I was leaving.
