Having previously spotted this one from Margery Hill I thought this would be a relatively easy bag. However, with 74 trigs already under my belt I really should have known better than that !! From Langsett car park I took the obvious path down to the reservoir and crossed the dam wall. Shortly after this I followed the bridleway and permissive footpath through a conifer plantation on the southern bank of Langsett Reservoir. After crossing Thickwoods Brook the bridleway climbs to North America where the scenery becomes increasly isolated. From here I continued NW towards Hingliff Hill before turning SW at another junction of paths to head along Mickleden Edge and Cut Gate. This was a stunning part of the walk as Mickleden Beck slowly rises to meet the path so that you are splashing along the rocky bed of the nascent beck. Eventually the rocks give way to a peat grough. Upon reaching a cairn (just as the path begins its descent towards the River Derwent) I foolishly struck out across the heather of Featherbed Moss towards Crow Stones in what I believed to be the correct general direction. Still, this did at least flush out my first ever mountain hare !! However, I soon became confused by my inability to spot the trig and so, using Margery Hill as a marker, I consulted my map before continuing on a bearing of 326. Maintaining a bearing wasn't as straightforward as it sounds owing to the presence of two or three deep groughs and the need to circumnavigate pools of standing water. Finally the pillar appeared no more than 200m infront of me as I broached the shallow summit. Pillar is in surprisingly good condition given its exposed location. All four sight holes open but original metal cap has been replaced with a plastic insert. Peat badly eroded such that the base is some 2 foot above the ground. Good 360 views with Emley Moor transmitter clearly visible.

Would say the trig is now about 18 inches above the peat on its plinth. Done from Langsett via Margery Hill and a very boggy walk across (about 0.5km of which was doing the long jump). Took GPS reading then managed to delete before recording it when I got home.

Boggy walk across from Margery, despite the recent dry weather, although the path is easy to follow thanks to the wooden stakes. Trig stands proud from the surrounding peat thanks to substantial erosion. Also has a recent coat of white paint thanks to some kind beneficiary. Dropped down westward through the heather to Broadhead Clough, then back to Fairholmes.

I re-visited this pillar on 01 August 2006 after many previous visits, the most recent being in 2001. The first thing I noticed was that the memorial plaque for the dog "Penny" has gone - presumably stolen by some mindless vandal. The plastic top cap that I fitted in 2001 is still in situ and has now been painted white. The pillar is in good condition although its base stands about a foot above the surrounding peat due to erosion.
