Parked near the golf club house to the south of the beacon. Steady and undulating climb across the golf course, past the quarry on the right, east. Hill fort visible from about 500 metres on approach and there appeared to be a cow at the top. On reaching the summit there was indeed a cow standing on the path a few metres from the pillar. Quite unusual. There were also quite a lot of people about. A group of about ten DoE hikers, their ‘teacher’ and about half a dozen others milling around and generally hogging the pillar. Never had to wait so long to get pictures. Stunning views from the beacon, the Severn Estuary even the crossing in the far distance, the Malverns and other local high points such as Cleeve Hill. A topograph has been put on top of the pillar, useful for identifying other landmarks, and a new or well maintained base for the pillar. Clear day, almost top marks.

I have to give this a 10 for the violently undulating series of dips and ridges on which it stands, together with its general good condition and its great views. However, this was my least favourite visit of the day, as I was lashed by strong winds and rain from the moment I set eyes on the pillar. The simple act of taking the usual photos and selfies was rendered farcical by an unrelenting gusty squall which blew my hat off, and which lasted until I was almost back to my car. Can't blame the trig for the weather, though. Easily accessed from small car park on the Cotswold Way and around the edge of the golf course.

A favourite of mine to visit with my 91 year old grandfather. Trig point is in good condition, despite the bad erosion the ground around it is suffering from. I understand that this has now been tastefully concreted; I will pop an updated log after I next visit. It certainly needed it. Watch out for golfers as you walk up; very pleasant walk on a sunny day up from the Catbrain Quarry direction. The view has always been splendid. Lots of iron benches to rest those weary feet en route too! If you are in the area, then take the time to visit Crickley Hill, which has an outstanding panorama of Gloucester and Cheltenham. You can even see Brown Clee Hill from there.
