A short walk up from Ballater. Glenmuick house not super friendly to walkers but I'm not sure of the legality of their signs! Once past though it was a straightforward walk up a path to the pillar. Great views. Completed on the way to Mount Keen.

Amazing - Amazing - Amazing the views of Lochnagar are jawdropping - mind you didn't see it from the top due to overcast cloud.

Route as Wubbleyew but my path which led to the rear of Glen Muick house brought me to an openable gate in the deer fence. Saw the statue of the man at the top nesar the trig and also a similarly constructed black rabbit sitting on the wall beside the track just after forest ends.

Parked in Ballater, crossed the Royal Bridge, then up into woodland to find a footpath which passes behind Glenmuick House, to pick up the track to Pananich Hill. Needed to clamber over one drystone wall in the process. Enjoyable stroll, enhanced by hundreds of orange butterflies flitting about - wonderful. Pillar is fine, with open cap & 2 s/h's open. Nearby is a black plastic sculpture of a man looking skywards. Rather strange and esoteric. But I liked it, although not sure it'll survive many winters up here.

Weather forecast had been reasonable but there was low cloud so no views. Snow underfoot. I suspect on a clear day the views of Lochnagar to the SW and the Cairngorms to the North and West plus Deeside to the East would be excellent.

Superb views of Deeside,Lochnagar,Mt Keen,Cairngorms etc from this relatively low end to a long ridge running from the high mounth. Trig in good condition apart from exposed spider ( no cap or plug ).

Despite what's shown on the OS map, there's a track all the way to the pillar. Wonderful views.

Overall approach from northwest. Set off from Ballater. Entered woods at NO373955 and followed mapped paths and firebreaks to NO382945 where a metal stile allows passage over the boundary wall onto open hill. From there a track leads all the way to the heather clad summit. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces west. Long panoramic views in all directions.
