A big thank you to our friends and neighbours,Ken & Hilary, for providing the transport and company for our grand day out in Accrington. Despite being internationally well travelled they had never properly bagged a trig before and as we approached the top the excitement was palpable. The pillar itself was a bit battered and nowhere as good a viewpoint as the nearby Peel Monument; but an enjoyable walk up from the top of Avenue Parade for all that. We then adjourned to the Whitaker Arms for tea, where 200 years ago one of my ancestors had the good sense to establish a place of refreshment. Earlier on in the day we had seen the Tiffany glass collection of the Haworth Art Gallery and paid our respects to the Accrington Pals at the Oak Hill Memorial.
