A pleasant walk from Gammersgill in Coverdale following the river Cover into Carlton. Across Melmerby moor, climbing Penhill and dropping into West Burton, then a wonderful footpath through many hay meadows up the Walden valley eventually crossing Fleensop moor into Horsehouse. Interesting stone constructed trigpoint. A beautiful day meant superb views all round.

Me and my friend "Spinner" climbed to this trig on this nice November day. We parked in West Burton, then went to have a look at "Cauldron Falls" then we walked south following "Walden Beck", then we turned left and walked up "Harland Hill" then across to the summit of "Hight of Hazely". Then we went across the peat moor to "Penhill trig" on the way down we walked down "Black Scar" to pick up the footpaths back to "West Burton" a walk of just over 8 miles.

The Start Of Our Walk Me, Spinner and Rocky the dog at Cauldron Falls, West Burton.
Heading for the Summit Spinner and Rocky heading for the summit of "Height Of Hazely"
The Summit This is the summit of the Hight of Hazely which on the map is marked at 1814 feet above sea level but my gps said it was 1805 ft ?? as you can see we are just over 3 miles from the start of our walk with 5 miles to go.

Last maintained by the OS in April 1975. SITE VISIT: Approached from east. Parking by east side of road on highest point at SE067868. Followed mapped paths most of the way to top then carefully chosen route across plateau to avoid rough ground and random depths. Trig located on high open moorland just south of mapped boundary wall. Nice location. Stone built pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces west, ~273. All sight holes open, innard filled with litter on all three dimension. Full 360 panoramic view.

Easily accessible and highly visible. I came up the bridleway through the fields from the cattle grid to the east. I then followed the waymarker round and up the flank of the hill rather than a full frontal assault. This brought me to a gate at SE 05400 86555. Once through it was just a matter of following a walked path on the south side of the wall to arrive at the pillar. As others have said a somewhat unusual shape. Some excellent views from this location.
