This was a really nice walk up from the village a bit steep and as hot as hell today, with a Cuckoo calling in the wood somewhere. Nice shade under trees near trig point.

Bagged 3 today whilst walking a 15 mile circular from Cranborne and back. I approached trig by using the footpath close to church. Easy to locate in small hill top woodland. Wonderful views on the way up. Typical England spread out in all its glory. Would recommend this to any pillarist.

I love these downs and used to walk here regularly many years ago when I lived in Salisbury, so this was a return visit to at last record the Penbury Knoll trigpoint. Beautiful views over to Bokerley Ditch and Martin Down, where WH Hudson set his book: A Shepherd's Life (1910). Back down the footpath to the strange village of Pentridge, where I couldn't resist another visit to St Rumbold's Church. Rumbold was a boy saint of the royal family of Mercia who supposedly only lived three days - back in those mystical, magical days of yore....

Parking awkward in Pentridge village due to narrow roads. Pleasant 900m walk up the hill onto Penbry Knoll, where sits the earthworks of a hill fort. The pillar sits a little to the east at the highest point of the hill offering good views N; S and E partially restricted by mixed woodland; views W obscured by woodland on Penbury Knoll. Pillar is in good condition; 1 sight hole open, the other 3 closed; original cap in place. Penbury Knoll is located on the 212-mile Hardy Way.

The pillar stands on the edge of a thicket of mature trees atop a small Cranborne Chase hillfort; its foundations are exposed by a couple of inches on the hillfort side; it has a metal cap with shallow letters and FB S2590. The site looks out over the interior of the Chase to the north; trees prevent a view in other directions. Pentridge Down affords good views and proved to be a pleasant short walk with the grandchildren.
