Bagged as YSM0027 Southampton FBM. I went to college in Southampton many moons ago and at one point lived in a house with 2 gents who worked at the OS - which was just up the road. So I was quite surprised when the sat nav sent us here but all was explained once at the FBM as this was the original site of the OS, not it's current modern site! Brought back some good and bad memories of my time here, funny how life turns out, I thought Southampton was 'by the sea' until I lived here, the docks don't have much of a beach but there are beaches pretty close I suppose. Well enough pondering over the past, more YOSMs to log! #11 day#2 - At this point we decided we just needed to head for Beer as we still had some way to go Total day#1 #13

This is my first FBM - I'm definitely a pillar man. I've probably walked past this hundreds of times over the years, and never bothered to record it, but this is the site of the former HQ for Ordnance Survey (1841-1969) so why not? Some of the original buildings survive, but much lost during Southampton's blitz in 1940. The OS moved here from their former site: the Tower Of London, and the buildings had originally been a barracks, then an asylum for military orphans in 1816.

I wonder how many people walk past this each day and wonder what it is? It’s probably one of the best preserved and most accessible Fundamental Bench Marks in the country. Being in the centre of Southampton, there are no ‘views’, just well… city centre. I was kneeling on the pavement next to the FBM, getting my GPSr and camera out of my rucksack when a group of youths walked past. One of them stopped, threw a handful of coins onto the plinth in front of me, said “There y’are, mate.” and walked off. OK… I wasn’t in my ‘Sunday best’ but I didn’t think I looked THAT scruffy.
