With the first cold snap of winter, the still clear day with crisp frost was perfect for the Real Ale Ramble out of Llanwrtyd Wells. Electing to walk the shorter 12mile route I arrived at the 3rd beer check point on the upper reaches of Pen y Garn-goch with plenty of time in hand to divert off and reach the summit via a forest track and convenient fire brake. A bit cold and gloomy at the pillar, tucked away in a shaded corner of the stoney summit clearing. Returning to the check point on a different route found me struggling through dense young firs growing up through overgrown brash- not nice. Much concern in whole area over proposals for proliferation of wind turbines and extensive electricity pylons.

Up for zig zags and then straight along the Eastern edge of the summit plateau to where the track forks left-hand grassy which you take. Curl right round to the left until there are two breaks through to left, south. you are only about 30metres thru to the clearing where the trig pillar and cairns are

It certainly went up hill and down dale but after we joined the helta-skelta type track and path near the to they listened to me and didn't venture into the dense trees instead stating on the path and circling around to the clearing and cain and trig at the top.

Pillar found with patina of hair fractures but otherwise good. Original cap in place, lightly indented lettering; rear and LHD side sight holes open. Hill top clearing but conifer plantation of sufficient height to preclude any views. Nice quiet and remote spot though.

Same approach at Sagina nivalis, from east on forest track.(approx SN892504 with good parking) This is not marked on OS but v clear on Satelite images, what is not clear is the fact that on these images it looks like clear fall but is in fact as previous visitor says 15ft conifers and densly packed. I had a couple of aborted atempts from due South of pillar with GPS showing approx 100m but didnt manage 20. Evenually retreated and followed track to the N of pillar location, there is a point off this track at SN88462 50344 where you only have about 15ft of trees to pass through to acess clearing. I wont make claims for accuracy of grid as the trees will start to interfere with readings as they get taller, but should be pretty close. Pilar had some views but these will disappear with time as the trees grow. Weather closing quickly so headed back same way. Pillar condition is good, low in the ground but guess has been protected by forest on and off over the years!

If you can find an easy way to do the last 100m to the trig (and to escape from it afterwards) you are a better man than I, Gunga Din!
