This is a very important pillar for me. It was completed on the day I was born, 5th March 1953. I just had to visit today, on our 65th birthday! Unfortunately the weather left a lot to be desired for such a momentous occasion.

I parked in a lay-by, approximately 1/3 mile north of Helmydd farm, where there’s a gate into the field. I followed a feint track south west across that field to a gate into the adjacent field that’s home to this pillar. Be warned… It’s very wet as you approach the pillar so pick your route with care or you’ll be up to your knees in bog! It was very misty today and visibility was very poor, only a few yards, so I was just ‘following the arrow’ and I had to back-track a couple of times to avoid the worst of the boggy ground. The pillar is on a very pronounced ‘nipple’ on the hilltop. It’s in good condition and has all its metalwork in place. As I could only see a few feet, the view was non-existent, which was a bit of a bummer!

Metal plug [raised letters]. Private. From crossroads south of Eglwysbach, walk up access road to Ty Nant Farm - this continues as RoW up to Ty-mawr Farm [probable owner], from where an excellent track [not RoW, but marked on 1:25 map] ascends the hill. Trig up to right, across open sheep pasture, atop prominent mound [OS map 'tumulus']. Highest point on east side of Conwy Valley - a big hill beneath a big sky.

We parked in a layby just north of Helmydd Farm, where a gate leads onto the pasture. Straight up and then turn left and the trigs in front of you (one easy fence to cross). Pleasant pasture all the way (what a contrast to Iwerddon which is slightly lower). Plug with raised lettering.
