Initially a false start - having read the reports below about climbing deer fences I thought a route from the S along the track that runs up the side of Brown's Sike might avoid the fences. Heartbreaking to discover that track is now a huge tarmaced motorway for juggernauts constructing a new wind farm development. Told by site officials in no uncertain terms to get off their building site, as big a bunch of bastards as you'd expect from philistine vandals bulldozing our wild and lonely places so another greedy landowner can buy a villa in the Med. Rant over. Drove back N to the wee lay-by and up over the ladder stile, up the hill following the inside of the deer fence all the way, fence takes a sharp left at the top before a sharp right and lo 'n behold there is another ladder stile over the fence onto the open moor and a short bash over tussocky ground to the pillar. Wonderful views SW - NW - NE, views SE now spoiled by...oh don't get me started again...

View South East How many more of these bloody things do we need? Funny how they ain't covering the Cotswolds with them...

Parked near the cattle grid at NT527066 where there is a gravel packed area so not to cause a nuisance. There is a style over the deer fence close to the cattle grid. From here straight up to the deer fence at the top. To plant the trees up the slope they have lifted sods near each one which are now covered by grasses and are full of water. There is a gate at NT532061 at the top of the burn, but the deer fence has smaller fence posts along the bottom of it which makes it easy to climb over. This one finishes OSE 331.

A nice circular walk up to the trig from the road, over the deer fences and up to the top - only 3.4 miles as a looped walk. No sunshine at time of visit but good views from the top and lots of wild deer up in the hills which were nice to see.

To get a circular walk I parked just south of Shankend road end at the old quarry and headed south on road until NT529051 where I went through the gate in the deer fence and followed an old track uphill. Proceeded to the south western end of the summit ridge by going up the western edge of the plantation, quite a flat summit but proved drier than expected and an easy walk along to the trig from here. To descend I headed west to cross at a gate and straight downhill to get back to the road over a ladder stile at which point the rain came on for a wet last km to the car.

Parking at unmapped cattle grid (NT 5269 0662). Stile over deer gate approx 90m N, then rough ground - easiest to follow fenceline up to second deer fence, which needs to be climbed. Pillar sits at summit of the hill with extensive views. An original centre cap is retained, lightly indented lettering; LHS sight hole unplugged, front and rear plugs both breached. Horizontal fracture extends round the pillar mid-way between FB and top.
