We were following a walk from the OS Pathfinder guide around Wolsingham and saw that this TP was just half a mile or so off the route. We left Wolsingham and walked up the Hamsterley Road then branched off on the Harthope Farm road and carried along The Weardale Way. At the point where the route took us down off the ridge, we carried on past the Elephant Trees looking for the FP marked on the OS map. No sign of any path so we made our way carefully over the heather to the pillar. Great views, and if we had been there a couple of weeks later the sea of purple would have been amazing.. Made our way back to the Guide route, then down to the river and railway and back to Wolsingham. Beer in The Black Lion to finish off.

Parked at the gate just after the Harehope Farm entrance, then a gentle walk up the lane to the gate onto the moor. Very little evidence of the footpath over to the trig. A fantastic walk - the birds were singing, the fields were full of lambs, there was the occasional tootle from the diesel trains running on the heritage Weardale Railway drifting across the valley & we could see for miles up on the moor.

Just enough for one vehicle to park opposite the end of the drive to Harehope Farm, and a gentle ascent of a mile and a half along a gated road/track/path to the pillar, surrounded in a sea of purple heather. Lovely location and views.

Parked up on the road to St John’s Hall to E, then ran along the track westwards past the Elephant Trees, then a short bash over the heather. Next I headed E and bagged the trig at Five Pikes, before returning along the track to the car (but not before a quick lake circumnavigation of a dryed-up lake at the top of Hole Beck)
